Christ being under obligation to fulfil all righteousness, delayed to enter upon his public ministry until he was about thirty years of age. Was not Christ the Holy One of God qualified to preach the Gospel at twenty, or at twenty-five? Why then was it delayed till he was about thirty? The answer is easy, that he might fulfil a!l righteousness; or, that he might fulfil all that was required in the ceremonial law. "This was neces. sary that he might be considered as a lamb without blemish and without spot.
It was necessary also that Christ should do every thing which is required of man in the moral law, the law of ten commandments. It was necessary therefore that he should honour and obey his parents. “Children,” saith the apostle, "obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” It was also right that Christ should obey his parents in the Lord
This he was willing to do. This was implied in the instrument to which he is supposed to have put his hand in the covenant of redemption. "Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.' At the celebration of this feast, Jesus, at the age of twelve years, appeared with his parents at Jerusalem. And when they returned, the Child Jesus tarried behind, it not being known to his parents. This how. ever ought not to be cousidered as an act of disobedi. ence. His parents were grieved when they missed their Son Jesus, and not finding him in the company, they returned, having gone a day's journey. They diligently sought him, and after three days, found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions." On account of bis absence, his mother seemed to chide him, for, "Son,” saiti she, “why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold thy fat ber and I have sought thee sorrowing." The reply of Jesus proves that he was not to be charged with disobedience; for be said unto urem, "How is it thai ye sought me? Wist ye not inat I must be about my Father's business? And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them.” He continued with them, from this time, till he was about thirty, when he was called of God as was Aaron to the work of his public ministry. And Moses brought Aaron and his sons and washed them with water. So likewise was Jesus washed with the water of Jordan. Jesus had now, no connexion with his parents, as a child in subjection to their commands. He was, therefore, in a more peculiar sense the Lord's; being consecrated to the work of the Gospel ministry. God said of the tribe of Levi, “They shall be mine; I am the Lord:” so he is to be considered as saying of his Son Jesus, He shall be mine; I am the Lord. . Hence when Jesus was baptised, the heavens were opened unto him: “and lo; a voice from heaven saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Being thus consecrated to the work of the ministry, though Jesus was no longer under obligation to obey Joseph and Mary as parents; yt he was obliged to love them as neighbours. For Christ was made under the moral, as well as the cer. emonial, law. Christ therefore was under obligation to love God with all his heart, and his neighbour as himself. And against this holy, just and good law, the Son of God never offended. He observed perfectly every command of the moral law. He was an Israelite indeed in whom there was no guile. He was not in ihis respect like Aaron, for he was a sinner, and needed an atonement for bis owon sins as well as the sins of the people. Therefore such a High Priest as Jesus was, became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacritice, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.* Hence, we are redeemed by the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blem ish and without spot.”

JOHN v, 39. Search the scriptures; for in them ye
have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 3. REDEMPTION by the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, supposes that the actions and sufferings of Christ while in the flesh, answered all the types and shadows by which he was exhibited in the Word of God.
In every part of the Scriptures of the Old Testament; Jesus Christ is brought clearly into view. Long before he came in the flesh, was he exhibited almost in every page of that Sacred Volume. Hence, when he came into the world and entered upon the duties of his ministerial office, he said to the Jews; “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” These Scriptures testify of Christ by shadows, types, and predictions. Christ, therefore, is the Substance of the shadows; the Antitype of all the types and shadows by which he was exhibited in the Mosaic dispensation. And Christ is the Subject of a great part of the predictions which are found in the Holy Scriptores. tle is the Person of whom it was foretold that he should bruise the serpent's head. He was the Antitype of Moses, like unto whom, it was predicted, that the Lord God would raise up a Prophet, even Christ. Christ was the Antitype of Adam; for Adam was a
figure or type of him that was to come. Wherever there is a shadow there must be a substance: and wherever there is a type there must be an antitype. The type supposes that the antitype is, as we may say by illustration, behind the curtain; it hath not yet made its appearance; it is exhibited or brought into view only by figures, types, and shadows.
Hence a type always looks both backward and forward. The antitype is the pattera or copy from which, or agreeably to which, the type is formed. If Adam, therefore, were a type of Christ, of whom the Apostle asserts that he was “the figure of him that was to come," then Christ was before Adam. And if Adam was the type of him who was to come, that is, of Christ, who, in the days of Adam had not come in the flesh, then, in a sense Adam was before Christ. Hence a type stands on middle ground, looking back to the antitype as a pattern for the construction of the type, and forward, pointing out what the antitype would be, or how it would appear when it should come forth from behind the curtain.
A type is no farther, or in no other sense a type, than it perfectly represents the person or thing which it was designed to represent. Adam, it is granted on all hands, was a type of Christ. Let us inquire wherein, as a type, he took his likeness from Christ; for he could not be a figure of Christ, only, in those things in which there was an exact agreement. This then must be searched out. It is allowed by all that Adam was a covenant head; and so also was Christ. It was implicitly promised Adam that if he would continue obedient through the course of his trial, and not eat of the forbidden tree, that children should be born to him, and his children's children to the latest posterity, in a state of moral purity or perfect holiness. So it was promised Christ the Antitype, that if he would continue perfectly holy, as a lamb without blemish and without spot, and in that character would do the will of him that sent him, that is, would do every
thing to which he had given his cordial consent in the covenant of redemption, children should be born to hiin, through the power and grace of God to the latest generation of men. That is, Christ should have a seed to serve him, a numerous race; that, as a reward for his covenant faithfulness, there should be given him ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of the fallen race of Adam. Those millions which shall be born to Christ and become the children of the Most High, through the influence of the Divine Spirit, in consequence of the covenant faithfulness of Christ, shall be given bim as a bride. These are the wife of the Lamb. An angel said to John in vision, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.” And this same apostle heard a triumphant song in heaven, because the marriage of the Lamb was come.
• And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice and give honour to him; for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.” And in consequence of the Covenant faithfulness of the Son, we hear the Father saying to him; “Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me and I will give thee the Heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.”
To the same purpose are the following words: “The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion; rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Hence, in consequence of his covenant faithfulness, Christ will have given him millions of the human race, with cheerfulness and delight to serve him; but Satan, and all the enemies of Christ will be brought beneath his feet.
These happy children of Christ will be made to persevere in holy obedience through life; and they finally
