ÉCOLE HOLLANDAISE. * J. STEEN. .... MUSÉE DE LA HAYE DOE JEUNE FEMME MALADE. Le peintre Jean Steen vivant habituellement dans la débauche, ses tableaux représentent ordinairement des scènes grivoises, celui-ci cependant n'est pas de ce nombre. que Une jeune femme malade reçoit la visite de son médecin; il est assis près de son lit, enveloppé dans un grand manteau noir, les jambes croisées et tenant ses gants de la main gauche. L'indolence de cette pose, semble annoncer le docteur paraît peu occupé, du motif pour lequel il est appelé ; mais, connaissant probablement ses goûts, la mère de la jeune malade lui présente un verre de vin. Cette boisson réveille en lui un sentiment de sensualité; ses yeux brillans, sa bouche de satyre, son sourire lubrique, tout démontre le plaisir qu'il éprouve à recevoir cette liqueur, présentée par une main gracieuse. La tête du médecin est un chef-d'œuvre d'expression. La physionomie de la mère est décente et noble. La pose de la jeune personne n'indique pas une maladie bien grave. Le dessin et le coloris de cette figure sont trop négligés pour qu'on les critique. Les ombres principales dans ce tableau, manquent de vigueur, et peut-être les masses de lumières n'offrent-elles pas assez de variété. Ce précieux ouvrage a été vu dans la galerie du Louvre, il est maintenant à La Haye. Il a été gravé par Avril père. Haut., 1 pied 8 pouces; larg., 1 pied 5 pouces. THE SICK YOUNG WOMAN. The painter John Steen living constantly in excess, bis pictures generally represent loose scenes; this however, is not of that description. A young woman who is ill, receives a visit from her physician; he is seated near the bed, wrapt up in a large black cloak, his legs crossed, and holding his gloves in his left hand. The supineness of this attitude, seems to point out, that the doctor is but little occupied by the circumstance about which he is consulted: probably knowing his inclinations, the mother of the invalid presents him a glass of wine. This beverage awakens in him a feeling of sensuality: his sparkling eyes, his satyr-like mouth, his lascivious smile, all express the pleasure which pervades him in receiving this liquor, presented by a beautiful hand. The head of the doctor, is a master-piece of expression, and the countenance of the mother, is becoming, and noble; the attitude however of the young person, does not seem to indicate a very serious disease. The design and colouring of this figure, are in too negligent a stile, to admit of being criticised. The principal shadows in this painting want vigour, and perhaps the masses of light do not present sufficient variety. This valuable work was exhibited in the Gallery of the Louvre, it is now at the Hague, and has been engraved by Avril senior. Height foot 9 inches; 1 foot 6 inches. |
