Letter from the King of Tanjore to Governor Palk.
Received 21ft July 1765.

Monfieur Florin, agent from Mr. Law, came hither, and
we vifited each other; upon which certain articles were
agreed on,
and to that end the faid Monfieur Florin has
figned an agreement with me; I did the fame to him on
my part, a copy of which I fend for your perufal, which
will explain you the matter. Continue to write to me of
your health, that I may rejoice. As there is no manner of
diftinction betwixt us, I need not urge much to you.

A Copy of the Agreement.

Law De Laurifton do give the following agreement to Tolazazee Maharaz:

We shall take poffeffion of the fort of Carrical and its bound villages according to the former Saneds, keep ourselves within our own limits.

Annual tribute of Pagodas 1000 of Negapatam coin fhall be paid to your Circar every year in the month of June.

You may employ the people of your own Circar without the town to collect and receive the Juneans for the ufe of your Circar.

If a mint is established, the revenues thereof shall be paid to your Circar, according to the cuftom of Negapatam.

We shall behave fincerely with regard to your Samaftan (or Government), and if any one fhould act against it, we shall on no account affift him.

We shall not fell guns, gun-powder, fhot, or any warlike ftores, at Carrical, to your enemy; if we

1765 have a mind to fell them, they fhall be fold to your Circar. If any of your Circars people should make their efcape, and come to our district, we shall not protect them; and if you write to us we shall deliver them up to you, and you may punish them as you think proper,

As to the Pagodas fituated in the villages belonging to Carrical, we fhall continue their allowance according to Salabad cuftom, and take care that their worship and offerings, as well as the feaft called Radochevam, be performed and celebrated as ufual; we shall alfo continue the duties belonging to the faid Pagodas. We fhall not convert the Bramins houfes in the faid villages into that of the Soodras; and as to the Tanks belonging to the Pagodas and Bramins houfes, we fhall not fuffer any Europeans to go there.

We fhall build the fort of Carrical in the same manner as formerly,

A writing, which has been given to our Company by your Circar, concerning the four Magans, shall ftand null and void, and we fhall have no bufinefs concerning thofe Magans.

We shall act according to the above agreement.

Translation of a Treaty between the Nabob and the Dutch.

Agreement between the Nabob Umeer ul Omrah, Mau

der ul Mulk, Roufhana Dowlah, Haphez Mahomed Mo-
nover Cawn, Behauder Jung, in the name and on be-
half of his father, his Highnefs the Bundagawn Nabob
Walajah ul Hind. Umdet ul Mulk, Serajah ul Dowlah,
Anaverdy Cawn Bebauder, Munfoor Jung, Sepoy Sar-
dar, Mahomed Ally Cawn. Soubah of the Carnatick,
on the one part; and the Honourable Reyner Van Vlif-
fengen, Governor and Director of the Coaft of Choro-
mandel &c. Council of Negapatam, in the name of
and behalf of the Netherlandish Eaft India Company,
on the other part, made and concluded, for to make,
increase, more and more, the great friendship which /
a long time fince fubfifted between his Highness the
Soubah and the faid Company, concerning his being
come with his army, and having conquered the Fort
Tanjore, and the countries belonging to that kingdom;

after the receipt of 1,80,000 Pagodas, the jewels which have before been given in pawn by the Prince, for 1.80,000 Pagodas, which amount afterwards is poff-d in account, fo and in the fame condition as they have been fealed up by the Prince's feal, and according to the notice of his writers that have been found with them; the faid Governor and Council declaring likewife to have from henceforth never the leaft claim on the Prince's Countries.

the Company has paid for, to buy off the duty of the money of recognizance, amounting to 5000 Pardoes annually, and that of elephants; confifting of one with large teeth, and two with fhort ones, for every year; the faid Governor and Council promife to fend annually the faid elephants, according to custom, to Trivelore, and to deliver the money in ready cash at Negapatam to him that brings the receipt of his Highness for it.

Fourthly. Whereas the five original Bills of Sale, and one receipt of Canaga Sawee Pilla and Narfing Row, which are of the tenor, as the copies thereof delivered to the Circar. have been fent to Batavia, the Company promifes alfo to deliver them in the month of Jane or July of the enfuing year 1774, to Collandiapa Modely, factor to Mr Paul Benfield, declaring, that befides the faid Bills of Sale of aforementioned Districts and recognizance, they have no others, neither of the Prince himself nor his minifter.

Fifthly,

This done. contracted and agreed to at Nagore, and figned at Negapatam, in the Caftle, the 23d day of the Month November, in the year One Thoufand Seven Hundred and Seventy-Three.
