The account that nu' American: 44, had captured 'a British 49, gun frigate, reached the author, 'when a prisoner in the United States. An Englishman, early accustomed to regard the navy as the bulwark of his country, and not aware of any difference between the no minal Or rated, and the real force of a ship, might well feel a degree of humiliation in the Guerriere's loss. The event naturally excited a spirit Of inquiry; truth and fiction separated by degrees; and, before the author efl'ected his escape from the United States, he had learned duly to appreciate the tales Of American victories, both by sea and land.
