Aphra Behn, who died in 1689, was the daughter of Mr. Johnston, Governor of Surinam. She wrote a number of poems, seventeen plays, and several histories and novels. Among the latter was one entitled "Oronokoo, the American Prince," from which Southerne borrowed his Tragedy called "Oronoko," the fruit of Mrs. Behn's personal acquaintance with that noted personage.
