This work throws much light on the internal condition of Virginia and other colonies which provoked the outbreak known as "Bacon's Rebellion."

Aphra Behn, who died in 1689, was the daughter of Mr. Johnston, Governor of Surinam. She wrote a number of poems, seventeen plays, and several histories and novels. Among the latter was one entitled "Oronokoo, the American Prince," from which Southerne borrowed his Tragedy called "Oronoko," the fruit of Mrs. Behn's personal acquaintance with that noted personage. "De Sousa is by far the most important work for the literature of New Spain, that has ever been composed. It comprises 3,687 biographies, and although, like most Spanish works of the kind, singularly uncritical, yet it is a perfect treasure as it regards the cultivation of science and literature in Mexico and the adjacent countries. The work is extremely scarce."-Ludewig.

It consists of three volumes, but this volume is all that was published in the life of the author. The second and third volumes were printed after his death, and edited by his nephew.
