"The owner of, we believe, the only copy in this country of the original edi. tion of this Relation, has obligingly loaned it to me. In order to enable collectors who possess some of the Jesuit Relations to place at least beside these an exact reprint of this extremely rare volume, I have undertaken a small edition, reproducing the original page for page, line for line.

"The edition in the Collected Relations, published at Quebec, was printed from a transcript made from the only other known copy in the National Library

at Paris. This transcript was to all appearances hastily and carelessly executed. The consequence is, that the Quebec edition abounds, as a minute collation proves, with grave errors of omission and alteration.

"The present reprint will be limited to twenty-five copies, and will be sup. plied, in sheets, to subscribers at $25 a copy."-E. B. O'Callaghan.

This volume, known under the name of the Chronicle of Cologne, has often been cited by the historians of printing on account of a passage where it is asserted that the art was discovered at Mayence by Jean Gutenberg in 1440, and perfected in 1450.

On fol. 339 verso, under the year 1493, is the following reference to America: "New islands also were found in which men roam (live) like beasts."

This very rare tract contains the early history of the Swedish Church in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, etc. The father of the author was sent to New Swe. den in 1697, where his son was born. The historical details and notices of the Indians are of interest. The poetical dedication is in English, as well as a com. plimentary letter of three pages from Andrew Nesselius to the "Learned Amer ican." The map contains portions of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. The tract seems to have escaped the notice of Rich, Stevens and Sabin.
