It is now a well established fact that William Smith, Chief Justice of New York, was the author of this work. The compiler of this Catalogue, many years since, saw in the collection of the Hon. Peter Force, Washington, a letter from Mr. Smith to Sir William Johnson, Bart., from which is the following extract:

"Mr. Croghan set out the day before I expected he would, else I proposed sending for a copy of Bouquet's Expedition to Muskinghum, which I drew up from some papers he favored me with, and which is reprinted in England, and has had a very favorable reception."

In a note in the Memoirs of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, (Vol. 6, p. 147,) it is stated that "Chief Justice Gibson said that Brackenridge emulated not without success the originality and purity of Swift; and Dr. Cannahan, President of Princeton College, speaks of his work as a book second in genuine humour only to its great prototype, Don Quixote de la Mancha. These gentlemen were well acquainted with Western Pennsylvania, and their estimation of Modern Chivalry gives it a high value among the works to be examined on the subject of the (Whiskey) Insurrection."
