Ibid Secunda, p. 142, verso.-12. De concordia discordantium astronomorum, p. 145.

Although this book was printed before the discovery of America, it possesses, nevertheless, an interest from its connection with Columbus. It is known to have been a favorite of the great navigator, by whom it was much studied, and, by many, it is supposed that he found in it the opinions which suggested to him the feasibility of a western passage to India.

D'Ailly, (or de Aliaco, his Latinized name,) Archbishop of Cambray and Cardinal, was born in 1340, and died, according to some writers, in 1416, by by others in 1425. He was the author of many works, and one of the most learned men of his day. Las Casas is of opinion that his writings had more effect in stimulating Columbus to his enterprise than those of any other author. His work was so familiar to the great navigator, that he filled its whole margin with Latin notes in his own handwriting, citing many things that he had read elsewhere. "This book, which was very old," writes Las Casas, "I had many times in my hands, and I drew from it some things written in Latin by the said Admiral Christopher Columbus, to verify certain points appertaining to his history, of which I before was in doubt."-Hist. de las Indies, lib. 1, cap. II.

Washington Irving also saw and handled the precious volume, which was the copy possessed by Columbus, and which is now preserved in the Columbina Library at Seville. "It was a great satisfaction," he writes, "to discover this identical volume. It is a most curious and interesting document, the only one that remains of Columbus prior to his discovery. It illustrates his researches, and in a manner the current of his thoughts, while as yet his great enterprise existed but in idea, and while he was seeking means to convince the world of its practicability."-Life of Columbus, Vol. II., pp. 11, 12, note, N. Y. ed., 1848.

Mr. Major, in speaking of winds and currents, facts concerning which he had gathered from seamen, says: "While availing himself of these sources of information, Columbus studied with deep and careful attention the works of such geographical authors as supplied suggestions of the feasibility of a short western passage to India. Amongst these the Imago Mundi of Cardinal Pierre d'Ailly was a favorite."—Life of Prince Henry, the Navigator.

(Colophon) Excusum Vienna Austriæ, 1514

On the right of the 18th leaf is a marginal note by the editor, of which the following is a translation:

"Behold! he concludes that beyond the ecliptic, in the 50th degree, that region which Vespucius in his voyages in former years discovered and described, was habitable."

Albertus Magnus, of a Suabian family, became Bishop of Ratisbon. He died in 1280, and was considered the most learned man of his time. His book appears to have been published from the original MS. (see note at the end of the table). It is a treatise on Cosmography. His views on the habitableness of the earth beyond the tropics as expressed in the place cited had reference to the then undiscovered parts of Africa.

Humboldt, in speaking of the work, says: "Dans l'édition de Strasbourg, dont je me sers, et qui a paru trois ans après la mort d'Amerigo Vespucci, l'édi-teur, George Tanstetter est si émerveillé des conjectures d'Albert le Grand sur les terres de l'hémisphère austral, habité jusq'au 50 degré de latitude, qu'il y reconnait une prophétie accomplie par la navigation d'Amerigo Vespucci.”—Examen, Critique, Vol. I. p. 121.
