Acosta de Miguel Capila mercador de libros vezino de [First and second part of the general history of the Indies, with all the discovery and notable things which have happened from the time they were conquered to the year 1551. Together with the conquest of Mexico and New Spain.] "Gomara," says Mr. Ticknor, "the oldest of the regular historians of the New World,-who was born at Seville in 1510, and was, for some time, Professor of Rhetoric at Alcala. His early life, spent in the mart of the American adventurers, seems to have given him an interest in them, and a knowledge of their affairs, which led him to write their history. The works he produced, besides one or two of less consequence, were, first, his 'History of the Indies,' which, after the Spanish fashion, begins with the creation of the world, and ends with the glories of Spain, though it is chiefly devoted to Columbus and the discovery and conquest of Peru; the second, his 'Chronicle of New Spain,' which is, in truth, merely the history and life of Cortes, and which, with this more appropriate title, was reprinted by Bustamente, in Mexico, in 1826. As the earliest records that were published concerning affairs which already stirred the whole of Christendom, these works had, at once, a great success, passing through two editions almost immediately, and being soon translated into French and Italian." "He was secretary of Cortes, and was misled by informa. tion received from him, and from other persons, who were too much of a part of the story they undertook to relate to tell it fairly. His mistakes, in consequence, are great and frequent."-Hist. of Spanish Literature, Vol. I., p. 558. 1063 GONIDEC, J. F. M. M. A. LE. The History of Pennsylvania, from 4to. half calf, very rare, London, 1658-59 This copy contains a preface to both the 3d and 4th parts, signed Fernando Gorges, not in the Menzies copy. There is much confusion in the books attributed to Gorges, who has appro priated to himself the authorship of a work written by another, as appears by the following extract from Prince's "New England," published in 1736: 425 10 "When I went to England, I met with a variety of books and pamphlets relating to this country. Among others is a history of New England. from 1628 to 1654, 4to., London, 1654. The running-title of the book is 'Wonder- Working Providence,' &c., and in the genuine title-page, no author is named. Some of the books were faced with a false title-page; wherein the work is wrongly assigned to Sir F. Gorges; but the true author was Mr. Johnson, of Woburn, in New England, as the late Judge Sewall assur'd me, as of a thing familiarly known among the fathers of the Massachusetts Colony." The third of these books was no more nor less than the identical history of New England. 1073 GOSSELIN, M. Géographie des Grecs analysée; ou, les 1074 GOTTFRIED, J. L. VANDER AA. De Aanmerkenswaar- and plates, Gravenhage, Leyden, Van der Aa., 1727 [The most remarkable and renowned Voyages and Travels of the Portuguese, Spaniards, English, Danes, High and Low Dutch, as many others, chiefly undertaken for the Discovery of the East and West Indies, and other remote regions of the earth, etc.] This folio edition contains precisely the same matter of text aud illustrations as the octavo edition which appeared in 1707, but the pieces are differently arranged. In the latter they are placed chronologically, beginning with the nar. rative of Duplan Carpin, the Pope's Nuncio in Tartary in 1246-7, and ending with Dickenson's God's Protecting Providence in 1696. In the folio edition a different arrangement is adopted of the same materials. The relations are distributed under four different heads, having reference to the nations to which the writers belonged, and forming two volumes each; first, the voyages of the Portuguese; second, of the Spaniards; third, of the English; and fourth, of the French, Italians, Danes, Germans, Dutch and others,-a chronological order being observed in regard to the pieces in each of these subdivisions. 1075 GOTTIFREDO, ALEXANDRE.
