1581 MAPPE-MONDE de Fra Mauro (saec. XV.) reproduite par la
Photographie. 4 large sheets in folio.
Venice, 1866

This photographic reproduction was limited to a very small number of copies. The original map is preserved in the Ducal Palace at Venice.

1581* MAP annexed to the Memorial presented to the States General on the 18th Aug., 1616, by Gerrit Jacobsz Witson, cum socius, Directors of New Netherland, copied in fac-similie from the original in the National Archives at the Hague.

When this map was made the Delaware had not been explored by the Dutch, or at least, information of its having been done had not reached Holland, as we do not find the names of Cape Henry and Cornelius, which were given to it from Cornelius Jacobsen May, the first discoverer, according to De Laet, French ed. XII.

It will be observed that Mannates appears on this map as the name of New York island. De Laet says in the Nouveau Monde, p. 75, that Hudson so named it, that is, Manhattes.

1596* MARTIN, LUTHER. Modern Gratitude: Addressed to Richard Raynall Keene, concerning a Family Marriage.

8vo. sheep, Maryland, 1801

Very scarce; and a curious piece of American family and political history. The parties are the celebrated Luther Martin, the Attorney General of Maryland, a leading Federalist, and R. R. Keens, who was first Martin's Law Student, and afterwards his son-in law, much against his wishes, and who was a warm Democrat. Mr. Martin has introduced in these letters an interesting sketch of his early life, depicting, too, the society in Maryland at the period of the revolution. -Note by Mr. Murphy.

folio, red mor. extra, gilt edges, by Bedford, exceedingly rare.

There were two issues of this volume in the same year. Several typographical errors being discovered after the first was struck off, two leaves were reprinted and issued with the remaining copies. A new title was reprinted for these, and the two leaves which were inserted between the Decade and the poetry, contain a list of errata and an address to Cardinal Ximenes on the value of illustrating the text with a chart. This chart, which is wanting in many copies, is remarkably correct for the period, and nothing equal to it appeared for a long time after.

Mr. Quaritch, in his Catalogue for 1879, prices a copy, with the map, at £100. We learn that this copy came to America.

very rare.

This edition of the first three Decades of Peter Martyr is little known even to the most diligent bibliographers. Brunet mentions an edition of Madrid, 1516, as being noticed in the catalogue of the College of Clermont, which is probably the same book as this, the dedication to Charles V. being dated from Madrid, October, 1516."-Bibliotheca Grenvilliana.
