One of the plates represents a ship stranded on the back of a monstrous whale. The Philobiblon Society was instituted in London in 1853 by the Right Hon. R. Moncton Milnes (Lord Houghton) and others. Its membership was limited to persons interested in the history, collection or peculiarities of books. The number of members, at first thirty-five, was raised in 1857 to forty. Each member received two copies of the volumes published at the expense of the Club 12 but usually only one of those printed at the private expense of the members. They are printed on fine paper and constitute one of the most valuable collec. tions of tracts printed by the Printing Clubs and Societies of England. The series is scarce and seldom found in market.
