folio, engraved title aud 18 plates, half mor., 1621

The title contains the portraits of St. Brandan and Father Boyle. The latter accompanied Columbus on his second voyage, as apostolical vicar for the New World, attended by eleven ecclesiastics.

One of the plates represents a ship stranded on the back of a monstrous whale. The sailors could not get her off until the monks on board descended from the ship to the whale's back, and with full ceremony performed the grand mass, whereupon the monster descended gently into the sea, and the ship again floated.

Its membership was limited to persons interested in the history, collection or peculiarities of books. The number of members, at first thirty-five, was raised in 1857 to forty. Each member received two copies of the volumes published at the expense of the Club

but usually only one of those printed at the private expense of the members. They are printed on fine paper and constitute one of the most valuable collec. tions of tracts printed by the Printing Clubs and Societies of England.

The series is scarce and seldom found in market. Mr. Murphy's order for the books was for several years in the hands of his London correspondent, which were only received after his death, being the latest addition to his library.

The Harvard College elegiac and complimentary volume, in Latin, Greek and English, celebrating the death of George II. and the glorious accession of George III. These poems were the result of an invitation set up in the college inviting competition, and for which prizes were awarded. "The inevitable condition of such a work," says Mr. Duychinck, "is eulogy; so the departing guest is sped, and the coming welcomed, in the most rapturous figments of poetry. . . . All nature is called upon to weep, and again to rejoice; all hearts to bleed, and again to live, as one royal monarch ascends the skies and another the throne."-Cyc. American Lit.
