Printed for the Author by JOHN HABERKORN, and fold by A. LINDE, I 7 5 4. Karen Ob TO HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS CHRISTIAN, Crown-Prince of Danemark and Norway, &c. &c. PUBLIC MAY it please YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS, As I am a Native of Norway, and one of YOUR ROYAL FATHERS moft dutiful Subjects, I humbly crave Leave to introduce the following Sheets into the World under the Shelter of YOUR Patronage and Protection. The Motives, which induced me to this Attempt, was in the first Place the generous Encouragement, which the ROYAL FAMILY in Danemark always (to Their immortal Honour be it spoken) are inclined to give to any Undertaking whatsoever, that is laudable in itself and of Service to the Publick. In the next Place I was ambitious of recommending my Fellow - Subjects that Tongue, which YOUR HIGHNESSES MOTHER, our late moft gracious Queen understood in all its Beauty and Perfection, and for which our whole Nation for HER fake, have a partial and particular Regard. In the last Place, I confidered that no English Dictionary had hitherto appeared amongst us. If the Merit of the Performance fhould not prove fo great, as I could wifh it, yet I flatter myself, the Novelty of the Attempt may plead fomething in my Favour, and throw a Veil over the Errors and Inaccuracies which may poffibly have paffed by unobserved. I humbly conceive however, notwithstanding any fuch casual Imperfections, that this first Effay will be of no fmall Service to all fuch, as fhall be defirous of studying either of the Languages, whether for the Improvement in Literature, or the Conveniency of Trade and Commerce. I am fond of this Opportunity publickly to declare the ardent Zeal and profound Submiffion wherewith I remain, MEM AORK May it please: YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS, YOUR HIGHNESSES most devoted and moft obedient Servant ANDREAS BERTHELSON.
