Challenge of the Kirwan Stakes of 50 sovs.; 5 sovs. ft. Post on the Flat. Mr. G. Graydon's b. c. Roscius, three-years old, 7 st. 8 ib. ... Mr. Knox's ch. c. George, four-years old, 9 st. 1 2 THURSDAY.-Sweepstakes of 10 sovs. each, h. ft., with 25 sovs. added; the second to save his stake; Connelly's mile. Mr. Fortescue's c. by Damian, four-years, 7 st. 13 lb. ... Mr. Digby's b. c. Reichstadt, five-years old, 8 st. 4 lb. 12 1 Col. Westenra's b. f. Blush, four-years old, 8 st. 1 lb. 3 The following also started, but were not placed :-Mr. Holmes's ch. h. by Napoleon, five-years old, 9 st. 6 lb.; Mr. Watts's b. c. Claret, three-years old, 7 st. 11 lb.; Mr. Nowlan's c. by Skylark, four-years old, 7 st. 11 lb.; and Mr. L. Duffy's b. c. Tom-tit, three-years old, 7 st. 11 lb. BATH. WEDNESDAY, June the 12th.-Produce Sweepstakes of 50 sovs. each, h. ft., for three-year-old colts, 8st. 61b.; and fillies, 8st. 41b.; untried stallions or mares allowed 3lb.; both, 5lb.; one mile (twenty-three subscribers). Fulwar Craven's b. f. Deception, by Defence, 8 st. 4lb. (Treen) Mr. Wreford's b. c. Westonian, 8 st. 7 lb. (J. Day) 1 2 3 Mr. Isaac Day's b. f. Science, by Defence, out of Maldonia, 8st. 1lb. (Pavis) Betting: 6 to 1 on Deception. A closer finish than was looked for, the Oaks winner having only the best of it by a length. Mr. Day claimed the stake on the ground that Deception and Westonian went on the wrong side of a post; and the Steward had not given his decision when we last heard from the Clerk of the Course. Mr. Wreford has also objected to the pedigree of Deception. The Somersetshire Stakes of 25 sovs. each, 15 ft., and only 5 if declared, &c., with 50 sovs. added; the winner to pay 20 sovs. to the Judge; the second horse to save his stake; two miles and a distance (forty-four subscribers, thirty-two of whom declared). Capt. Berkeley's Caravan, five-years old, 9 st. 1lb. (A. Pavis) The following also started, but were not placed:-Capt. Williamson's Mervan, five-years old, 7 st. 11 lb. (Nat); Mr. Sadler's Dart, three-years old, 7 st. 21b. (S. Mann); Capt. Lamb's Gardham, five-years old, 7 st. (G. Whitehouse); Mr. Bagnell's Lauretta, four-years old, 6st. 21b. (M. Johns); Mr. Pottinger's Hazard, three-years old, 6 st. 41b. (R. Pettat). Betting: 6 and 7 to 4 on Caravan, and 4 to 1 agst. any other. Without going into the moves at the early part of the game, it may be enough to say that Caravan was on the waiting system the whole of the first round. He then drew steadily on his horses, defeating them one by one, till a hundred yards from home nothing remained in the race save Barnacles. Pavis, however, had got his length pretty accurately, for he caught and passed him where such might be best done, and finally won by a length cleverly. Mervan was a tolerable third, though not placed. A Match of 50l. a side, p. p.; two miles and a distance. Mr. John Haddy's b. g. Woodman, aged, 7 st. 71b. (Connelly) Mr. Adam's b. m. Mantua, aged, 8st. 7 lb. The Kelston Park Stakes of 30 sovs. each, 15 ft., with 20 added, for two-year old colts, 8 st. 7 lb.; and fillies, 8 st. 41b.; a winner once to carry 3lb.; twice, 5lb. extra; the produce of untried horses or mares allowed 41b.; the straight half mile (six subscribers). Mr. Etwall's Hill Coolie, by Mulatto, dam (1829) by Figaro, grandam by Whisker, 1 2 Mr. R. Harris's b. c. Mariner, by Jack Tar-Kittums (allowed 41b)-(M. Johns) Betting: 5 to 1 on Hill Coolie, who made all the running, and won in a canter by a length. A Sweepstakes of 32 sovs. each, 10 ft., for foals of 1837; colts, 8st. 4lb.; fillies, 8 st.; those by stallions, or out of mares that never bred a winner, allowed 31b.; if both, 6lb.; the straight half mile (four subscribers). Mr. Sadler's ch. c. Petulant, by Defence, out of Pet (3 lb.), walked over. THURSDAY.-The Original Five Sovereign Stakes, with 50 added, for horses that have never won 1001. at any one time before the day of naming; three-year-olds, 7 st. 7 lb.; four, 8st. 7lb.; five, 8st. 121b.; six and aged, 9st.; winners of 1001. at any one time previous to the day of starting, to carry 5lb. extra; mares and geldings allowed 3lb.; two miles and a distance (eight subs.) Betting: 5 to 2 on Dart. Won easily, Doncaster broke down. 1 2 Mr. Sadler's Dart, three-years old (Mann) Mr. Fulwar Craven's Doncaster, five-years old (Treen) A Plate of 50 sovs. given by the Members for the County; heats, one mile and a half. Capt. Lamb's Gardham, five-years old, 8 st. 7 lb. (Whitehouse) 11 Mr. John Haddy's Woodman (half-bred), aged, 8st. 21b. (Connelly) Mr. F. Craven's I-wish-you-may-get-it, four-years old, 9 st. 4 lb. (Treen) 23 ... Mr. Bagnell's Lauretta, four-years old, 8st. 4 lb. (M. Johns) 34 Betting: First heat-5 to 4 agst. I-wish-you-may-get-it, and 4 to 1 agst. Gardham. Second heat-2 to 1 on Gardham. A Plate of 50 sovs. given by the Members for the City, added to a Sweepstakes of 5 sovs. each, for three and four-year-olds; three-year olds, 7 st. 7 lb; four, 8st. 10lb.; heats, one mile. Betting: First heat-3 to 1 on Science. Second heat-4 to 1 on Lucretia. Third heat-2 to 1 on Science. The Hurdle Race Sweepstakes of 5 sovs. each, with a purse of sovs. added; 11st. each; thorough-bred horses to carry 7 lb. extra; a winner of a hurdle race to carry 7 lb. extra; heats, one mile and a half and a distance, with three leaps in each heat (three subscribers). WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19TH.-A Sweepstakes of 50 sovs. each, h. ft., for the produce of mares covered in 1833; colts, 8 st. 7 lb.; fillies, 8 st. 3 lb.; those by stallions, or out of mares that never bred a winner, allowed 3 lb.; last mile; fourteen subscribers. Mr. Bigg's b. c. Arrian, by Actæon, out of Whisk (3 lb.) (J. Day, jun.) Betting: 6 to 5 agst. Arrian, and 6 to 4 agst. Taunton.-A very severe race with the threewon idly at the finish by three parts of a length: Taunton came to scale dead lame. A Handicap Plate of £50; one mile. Duke of Richmond's Vale of Belvoir, three years, 10 st. (Col. Bouverie) Betting: 2 to 1 on Montezuma. After running a few hundred yards, Master Eady went in front, and carried on the running till they closed the distance. Here Vale of Belvoir, who had been second, was caught by Montezuma, and the pair soon reached the former leader; beat him at the stand, and, after a splendid struggle to the chair, the victory was awarded to the Vale by half a length. The race for second was so close, that the judge only placed the winner. The Champagne Stakes of 30 sovs. each, 20 ft. for two-year-old colts, 8 st. 7 lb.; fillies, 8st. 4 lb.; the winner to give three dozen of Champagne to the Club, and fifty to be added by the Club, T. Y. C.; six subscribers. Mr. Ettwall's Hill Coolie, (J. Day, jun.) Mr. Bigg's ch. c. Thessalus, by Sir Hercules-Miss Badsley (W. Day) Mr. W. Ley's ch. f. by Glencoe, out of Mandoline, by Waxy, (Connelly) ... Betting: 5 to 1 on Hill Coolie. For a little better than half the distance the lot ran together on sufferance, for as soon as young John loosed his horse's head he came clear away, and won in a canter by a couple of lengths. A Free Plate of 50 sovs., for all ages; three-year-olds, 9 st. 10 lb.; four, 10 st. 8 lb. five, 11 st. 2lb.; six and aged, 11 st. 7 lb.; the winner to be sold for 150 sovs., if demanded, &c.; three quarters of a mile. Gen. Grosvenor's Merrythought, five years (Lord Wilton) Capt. Gardnor's Ochiltree, four years (owner) Mr. Harvey's gr. c. Master Eady, four years (Col. Bouverie) Capt. Pettat's Caliph, aged (owner) .. 1 2 0 0 Betting: 5 to 4 agst. Caliph, the same agst. Ochiltree, and 6 to 1 agst. Merrythought.-The first of the play was left to Ochiltree, who led half way up the distance, when Lord Wilton rushed past him, and won with all ease by some lengths. The other two never shewed in the race from the start. The Bibury Stakes of 25 sovs. each, 10 ft., and only 5 if declared, &c., with 50 added by the Club; two miles; twenty-seven subscribers, eleven of whom pay only 5 sovs. each. Mr. Herbert's b. g. Arctic, six years, 11 st. 1 lb. (Col. Bouverie) ... Mr. W. Ley's gr. c. by Priam, out of Speculator's dam, three years, 9 st. 10 lb. (Capt. Gardnor) 0 Betting: 2 to 1 agst. Dædalus, 5 to 2 agst. Alumnus, and 5 to 4 on the two agst. the field. This was decidedly the crack thing of the meeting, and a truer handicap, perhaps, never was made. It was any body's race from the first almost to the last, and, until they entered the straight run home, no sort of line could be drawn. There, as they rounded the turn, Arctic, who clearly ran out of his ground, shewed his power of pace by the way in which he got to the head again, and forced the speed most resolutely. A finer finish never was seen, Bandboy and Dædalus being so handy that the first was beaten by half a head only, and the second by a quarter of a length; the other three within a couple of lengths of the winner. THURSDAY, THE 20TH.-Match, 200 sovs., h. ft.; 10 st. 7 lb. each; two miles. Mr. Fairlie's The Hydra (Capt. Pettat) Capt. Lamb's Nimrod (Col. Bouverie) ... 1 2 Betting: 7 to 4 and 2 to 1 on The Hydra. This was but a poor affair, The Hydra waiting till it suited him to go up, when he came away, and won with all ease by a length. A Sweepstakes of 100 sovs. each, h. ft.; colts, 8st. 7 lb.; fillies, 8 st. 3lb.; mile and quarter; four subscribers. Mr. Bigg's Arrian (J. Day, jun.) ... Mr. Osbaldeston's Alexandrina (Rogers) 1 2 Even betting. This also came off a match, but one of a far different character. The pair kept close order, Arrian leading, till half way up the distance, when the filly challenged, got alongside him, ran there till just on the post, where young John again tried what steel and whalebone could effect, and won by a neck. The Cup Stakes of 25 sovs. each, 10 ft., &c., with 100 added by the Club; heat one mile and a half; ten subscribers, six of whom paid 10 sovs. each. Mr. W. Ley's Pocket Hercules, five years, 10 st. 9 lb. (Mr. J. Bayly) Capt. Lamb's Gardham, five years, 11 st. (Gen. Gilbert) Duke of Richmond's Vale of Belvoir, three years, 10 st. 4 lb. (Col. Bouverie) Mr. Osbaldeston's Miss Etty, four years, 9 st. 10 lb. (Capt. Pettat) 01 02 3 4 Betting: 5 to 4 agst. Pocket Hercules, 2 to 1 agst. Vale of Belvoir, and 5 to 1 agst. Gardham. Deciding heat: 6 to 4 on Gardham. The Racing Stakes of 25 sovs. each, with 50 added by the Club: mile and a half; four subs. Capt. Williamson's Melbourne, 8 st. 7 lb. (Nat) 1 Mr. W. Ley's gr. c. by Priam-Speculator's dam, 8 st. 10 lb. (Connelly) 2 Betting: 4 to 1 on Melbourne. The winner made all the running, and won cleverly by a length. The Andover Stakes of 5 sovs. each, with 50 added; one mile; fourteen subscribers. Capt. Pettat's Caliph, aged, 11 st. 5 lb. (owner) 1 Sir E. Baker's Montezuma, three years, 11 st. 9 lb. (Mr. J. Bayly) 2 Gen. Grosvenor's Merrythought, five years, 11 st. 9lb. (Mr. J. Villiers) 0 Capt. Gardnor's Ochiltree, four years, 10 st. 10 lb. (owner) 0 0 Mr. Osbaldeston's Alexandrina, three years, 9 st. 12 lb. (Col. Bouverie) Betting: 2 to 1 agst. Alexandrina, 5 to 2 agst. Montezuma, 4 to 1 agst. Ochiltree, and 5 to 1 agst. each of the others. The early work was done by Merrythought, who ran at head as hard as he could crack on to the distance, when he gave way to Caliph, Alexandrina, and Montezuma. These three then went at it, the old horse standing the batter the stoutest, and finally winning by a length. A Plate of £50 for the beaten horses; one mile. Mr. Etwall's Alumnus, six years, 13 st. (Mr. J. Bayly) Capt. Lamb's Gardham, five years, 11 st. (Gen. Gilbert) Capt. Gardnor's Bandboy, four years, 11 st. 4 lb. (Capt. Pettat) Betting: 5 to 4 on Alumnus, and 6 to 4 agst. Bandboy. Another admirable handicap. Bandboy made the running almost up to the stand, when Alumnus came out, and won a slashing race by a head. STOCKBRIDGE RACES. THURSDAY, JUNE THE 20тн. - Produce Stakes of 50 sovs. each, h. ft. for three-years-old; colts, 8 st. 7 lb.; fillies, 8 st. 4 lb.; 3 lb. allowed, &c.; mile and a half; twenty-eight subscribers. Fulwar Craven's Deception, 8 st. 4 lb. (Treen) walked over. Match of 100 sovs. h. ft.; 8 st. 7 lb. each; mile and half.-Capt. Lamb's f. by Defence, out of Heltona, received forfeit from Captain Williamson's c. by Defence, out of his Whisker mare. FRIDAY, JUNE THE 21ST.-The Thruxton Stakes of 10 sovs. each, with 50 added by W. Etwall, Esq.; Goodwood Cup weights; 3 miles; twelve subscribers. Duke of Richmond's Confusionee, three years, 6 st. 6 lb. (W. Day) ... Mr. Sadler's Diamond, three years, 6 st. 10 lb. (Goslin) 0 Betting: 6 to 5 agst. Alumnus, 7 to 4 agst. Confusionee (taken), and 5 to 2 agst. Diamond. This race was run pretty much as it stands in the list from start to finish, save that Alumnus took the lead for a few hundred yards, and then threw up his cards. It was won in a canter, the two not placed being beaten off. A Sweepstakes of 50 sovs. each, h. ft., for two-year-old colts, 8 st. 9 lb.; and fillies, 8 st. 6 lb.; T. Y. C.; six subscribers. Gen. Grosvenor's Diploma, by Plenipotentiary-Icaria (Connelly) Lord G. Bentinck's b. f. Sal Volatile (J. Day, jun.) The betting began at 7 to 4 and 2 to 1 on Diploma, and finished at 6 to 5 on Sal Volatile. Diploma waited, by dint of hard pulling at her, till near the distance, when she came out, and won in a canter. A Handicap Sweepstakes of 10 sovs. each; one mile; five subscribers. Betting: 6 to 4 agst. Alumnus, 2 to 1 agst. Wasp, and 4 to 1 agst. Merrythought. A wicked race from end to end, won opposite the stand, with a resolute rush, by a short length. Wasp pulled up, having broken a blood-vessel. HIPPODROME RACES.
