Lift up thine eyes round about, and fee; all of them are gather ed together, they come unto thee; thy fons fhall come from afar; and thy daughters fhall be carried at the fide *. Then shalt thou fear, and overflow with joy; and thy heart fhall be ruffled, and dilated; because the riches of the sea shall be poured in upon thee ; and the wealth of the nations fhall come unto thee. An inundation of camels fhall cover thee; the dromedaries of Midian and Epha; all of them from Sheba fhall come: gold and frankincenfe fhall they bear; and the praises of the LORD fhall they declare. All the flocks of Kedar fhall be gathered unto thee; the rams of Nebaioth fhall minister unto thee: they shall ascend with acceptance on mine altar; and my beauteous house I will glorify.'

In verfe 8th. &c. he speaks of the return of the nation to the land of promife; and compares the swiftness of their coming, to the return of the doves to the dove-cot; for then their flight is more rapid, than when they set out, on account of their haste to re• This alludes to the expreffion of Mofes Numb. 11. 12. turn to their young: thus will the nation come swiftly from the most diftant parts. "Who are these that fly like a cloud? and as the doves to their windows? Verily the diftant coasts shall wait for me; and the ships of Tarshish among the first: to bring thy fons from afar; their filver and their gold with them because of the name of the LORD thy God; and of the Holy One of Ifrael: for he hath glorified thee. And the fons of the ftranger fhall build up thy walls; "For, as their ancestors deftroyed them, they are now to build them up again: "And their kings fhall minifter unto thee: for in my wrath I fmote thee; but in my favour I will love thee with the most tender affection. And thy gates thall be open continually; by day, or by night, they fhall not be fhut; to bring unto thee the wealth of the nations and their kings shall be attended with guides *. For that nation, and that kingdom which will not serve thee, shall perish; yea, those nations fhall be utterly defolated." And, as in the days of Solomon, Hyram king of Tyre furnished him with all forts of coftly wood, for the building of the temple; fo will the na*To guide those that come from far diftant countries.

tions in the latter days, bring every rich and coftly wood, to build and adorn the fanctuary, as he says verfe 13th, "The glory of Lebanon fhall come unto thee; the fir-tree, the pine, and the box together: to adorn the place of my fanctuary; and I will glorify the place, whereon I rest my feet. "In verfe 14th, he affures us, that when all those nations fhall come to Jerufalem, they will not come in pride and arrogance, but in a low, humble, and fubmiffive manner. "And the fons of thine oppreffors shall come bending before thee; and all those that despised thee, shall do obeisance to the foles of thy feet: and they fhall call thee, the city of the LORD: the Zion of the Holy One of Ifrael. " By the expreffion in the latter part of the verse, the Prophet informs us, that the nations will not come and proftrate themselves thus to them, on account of their great power, but for the fanctity and holiness of the Divinity that will then be in the midst of them: and which is a demonstration that this prophecy was not fulfilled at their return from Babylon; for then, the Affyrians and Babylonians, who had destroyed their kingdom, vexed and oppreffed them; did not come to bow, and do obeisance

to them, as is clear from all history both facred and profane: it therefore remains to be fulfilled at the redemption of the nation from the present captivity.

He then fhews that, not only their prefent miserable state, will be changed to a moft exalted one; but their ruined country, emerging from its obscurity, will become equally great and glorious; verse 15th. "Inftead of thy being forfaken, and hated, so that no one paffed through thee; I will make thee an everlasting excellency; a subject of Joy for perpetual generations.

The Prophet farther informs us, that as the nation during this long and dreadful captivity, had been continually robbed and plundered of its property, by the different nations under whose dominion they lived, as history clearly proves; it should then be the reverse; verse 16, " And thou fhalt fuck the milk of the nations; and be delighted with the riches of kings: and thou shalt know, that I the LORD am thy faviour; and that thy redeemer is the Mighty One of Jacob. Thus, will all the nations know that this. great change, will not be owing to any natural cause, but will be purely fupernatural..

He then affures us verfe 17th, that the spoil of the nations, will be so great, that info ftead of the brafs and iron, which they deprived them of during the captivity &c. they will bring them gold and filver in return. “ Instead of brass, 1 will bring gold; and instead of iron, I will bring filver; and instead of wood, brafs; and instead of stones, iron. And I will make thine infpector peace; and thine exactor righteoufnefs. "For their enemies plundered them in war and captivity; but with them, it will be quite the reverse; for their inspectors and exactors will be peace and righteousness; that is, they will poffefs all this riches in peace and righteousness; because, the nations will of their own accord, bring it in a friendly and peaceable manner : for as he says, verfe 18th, "Violence shall no more be heard in thy land; destruction and calamity, in thy borders: but thou shalt call thy walls falvation; and thy gates praile." In all their gates, there will be nothing heard but praise to the Almighty, for these great bleffings. And, as he at the commencement of the prophecy, had compared the captivity to darkness, and the redemption to light: he obferves verfe 19th. "No longer
