sion of sins should be preached in His name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke xxiv. 49, 47. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

Rom. x. 18. Psalm xix. 4. ....the Gospel which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; Col. i. 6.

And be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven. Col. i. 23.

2.-The Jews are to be scattered through all the nations of the earth: Their Cities forsaken, and their Temple destroyed: as a proof of God's displeasure for their rejection of the true Messiah.

For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a King, and without a Prince, (a Priest in Heb.) and without a Sacrifice, and without an Image, and without an Ephod, and without Teraphim. Afterwards shall the children of Israel return and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days. Hosea iii. 4, 5.

* As king David the son of Jesse was dead at least 250 years before Hosea wrote the words of this prophecy, it is manifest that the David here alluded to must be King Messiah the Son of David.

The Sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.* Gen. xlix. 10.

In the following passages Moses foretells the coming of Christ, and forewarns the Jews not to reject him.

The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a prophet from the midst of thee of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken :† Deut. xviii. 15.

* Here the dispersion of the Jews is foretold not to take place till Shiloh or Christ should first come.

+ This passage has been quoted in Acts iii. 22, by Saint Peter, and in Acts vii. 35, by Stephen, as pointing to Messiah: that Joshua, the Judge in Israel who immediately succeeded Moses, was not this prophet who is here foretold by Moses, is thus proved to us from a comparison of these two verses in the last chapter of Deuteronomy; "And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the Spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him, and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses." Now compare this with the very next verse to this which says "And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face." Here then we have Scripture authority that Joshua was not that prophet who is here promised; but that Messiah was indeed Him of whom Moses in the Law and the prophets did write, both Jews and Gentiles have had ample testimony, from the lengthened and uninterrupted continuance of the divine displeasure that has been poured out for nearly eighteen hundred years upon the whole Jewish nation, a time that exceeds by three hun. dred years the whole time that they were in the holy land, that period being no more than fifteen hundred years; that

I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Deut. xviii. 18, 19.

And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation,.... And I will bring the land into desolation, and and your enemies* which dwell therein shall be astonished at it. And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you; and your land shall be desolate and your cities waste. Lev. xxvi. 31, 32, 33 See also Deut. iv. 27. Deut. xxviii. 62, 63, 64 And they shall know that I am the Lord,when I shall scatter them among the nations and disperse them in the countries. Ezekiel xii. 15. See also Ezekiel xxii. 15, 16.

Messiah indeed was at his first coming to meet with the hard fate of being rejected is as clearly foretold as that he was truly Immanuel, (see the Second Psalm and Isaiah 53) but yet that his rejection was to be attended by judgments upon the whole nation has been also as clearly foretold, "whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name I will require it of him. So that the question put forth in Jeremiah ix. 12, has been solved and satisfactory answered by Luke xix. 44. - See ncxt page.

* How wonderfully descriptive of the present day! truly the Jews have no worse enemies than those who dwell in their own rightful land of Palestine.

How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?...When he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. Dan. xii. 6, 7

Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat, and hast scattered us among the heathen. Thou makest us a by-word among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

Psalm xliv. 11, 14 O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been displeased; O turn thyself to us again. Psalm lx. 1

Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord hath spoken, that he may declare it, For What the land perisheth* and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through? And the Lord saith.. I will scatter them also among the heathen whom neither they nor their fathers have known; Jer. ix. 12, 13, 16

Yet will I leave a remnant, that ye may have some that shall escape the sword among the nations, when ye shall be scattered through the countries. And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, &c. Ezek.vi. 8, 9

Thus saith the Lord God; although I have cast them far off among the heathen, and although I have scattered them among the

countries, yet will I be to them as a little sanctuary in the countries where they shall come. Therefore say, thus saith the Lord God; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel. Ezekiel xi. 16, 17

At that time shall the present be brought unto the Lord of hosts of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, the Mount Zion. Isa. xviii. 7

And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying, if thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; Because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

Luke xix. 41, 42, 43, 44

And they shall fall by the edge of the sword and shall be led away captive to all nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles until the times of the fulfilled.

Gentiles be Luke xxi. 24
