For thus saith the Lord; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear and not of peace : Ask ye now and see whether a man doth travail with child? Wherefore do I see every man with his hand on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness? Alas! for that day is great so that none is like it it is the time even of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. For it shall come to pass, in that day saith the Lord of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him: But they shall serve the Lord their God, and David their King, whom I will raise up unto them.

Jer. xxx. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. Mat. xxv. 13. Luke xii. 40. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares, For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Luke xxi. 34, 35.

If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour 1 will come upon thee. Rev. iii. 3.

II.

ON THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST.

1.-Christ reigneth now in Heaven.

Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting. Psalm xciii. 2. Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. Psalm xlv. 6

But unto the Son he saith "Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

Heb. i. 8. But thou Bethlehem Ephrata, &c. out of thee shall he come forth, whose goings forth have been from everlasting. Micah v. 2.

I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And, now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. John xvii. 4, 5. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. John xvi. 28.

Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

Luke xxiv. 26,

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matt. xxviii. 18 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. Mark xvi. 19 For he must reign, till he hath put all things under his feet...For He hath put all things under his fect. 1 Cor. xv. 25, 26.

See also Eph. i. 10.

For David is not ascended into the heavens; but he saith himself, the "Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou on my right hand, until I make thy foes thy footstool."

Acts ii, 34, 35. and Psalm cx. 1. But to which of the angels said he at any time, sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Heb. i. 13 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

1. Peter iii. 22 Who is even at the right hand of God, &c. Rom. viii. 34 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, &c.

Acts iii. 21. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Rev, iii. 21

2-Christ reigneth also on earth by His Holy Spirit in the hearts and lives of the faithful. But neither of these are to be mistaken for the second Advent.

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever, Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him : but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John xiv. 16, 17, 18.

And lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Matt. xxviii 20.

He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified. John vii.38, 39 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. John xiv. 20. I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: Isaiah xliv. 2. Joel ii. 28.

It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away the Comforter will not come unto you, but if I depart 1 will send him unto you. And when he is come he will reprove the world of sin &c. Howbeit when he, the Spirit

of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth: John xvi. 7, 8, 13.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak, &c. as the* Spirit gave them utterance. Acts ii. 4.

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is life because of righteousness Rom.viii. 9, 10.

Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same spirit &c. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit.... But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally, as he will...... For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 1 Cor. xii. 4, 8, 9, 11, 13.

Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ ?....he that is joined unto the Lord is one Spirit. 1 Cor. vi. 15, 17.

*The object of these quotations is not to prove the truth of Supernatural gifts, but to show that Christ's promise has been really made good; so that, though there be no more mir. acles, yet Christ dwells (by his Spirit) with the faithful evermore, as it is evident that a person may be a child of God without being able to perform a miracle; but yet that no one can be a child of God without having God's Holy Spirit within him,
