reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth even for ever. And thou O Tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem. Micah iv. 1, 2, 6, 7, 8.

Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel: be glad and rejoice with all thy heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord hath taken away thy Judgements, he hath cast out thine enemy the King of Israel, even the Lord, is in the midst of thee, thou shalt not see evil any more. In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem, Fear thou not: and to Zion, Let not thine hands be slack. The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. And I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame. At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all the people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, SAITH THE LORD. Zephaniah iii. 14-20.

Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw; and behold! four horns (or kingdoms) And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and

Jerusalem. And the Lord shewed me four carpenters. Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying. Those are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head but these are come to fray them, • to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it. Zechariah i. 18-21. Come my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast, Isaiah xxvi. 20. And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time; and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. Dan. xii. 1.

For thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send

Is not this the Carpenter, the son of Mary? so spake the unbelieving Jews of Him who condescended to leave the glories of heaven and to be called the Son of man. [see Mark vi. 3.] But really is not this He who is here described as such in a four told manner [in order to correspond with the kingdoms or four universal monarchies] and the same as he who is described by Daniel c. ii. as the unearthly stone that smote the Golden, Silver, Brass, and Iron and earthy image, or four kingdoms represented in Nebuchadnezzar's prophetic dream? see Daniel ii. 31— 45.

thee, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. Then took I the cup at the Lord's hand, and made all nations to drink, unto whom the Lord had sent me: To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day: Pharoah king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people; And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod, Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon, aud all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings. of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea, Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners. And all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert. And all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes. And all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth; and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. Therefore thou shalt say unto them, thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Drink ye, and be drunken, and spume and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you.

And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink, For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name,* and should ye be utterly unpunished?+ Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the Lord of hosts. Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words and say unto them, The Lord shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation: he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the Lord hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the Lord. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. And the slain of the Lord shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto

This would seem to refer to the name given to her in Jer. xxxiii. 16. or in Ezekiel xlviii. 35. See also Daniel ix. 18, where the same phrase occurs.

And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape. A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard for the Lord hath spoiled their pasture. :

Thus saith the Lord of hosts; behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; And 1 will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness.... But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days saith the Lord of hosts. For the seed shall be prosperous, the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shail give her increase; and the heavens shall give their dew, and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. And it shall come to pass that as ye were a curse
