In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. The Lord also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. Zechariah xii. 6, 7.

The envy also of Ephraim shall depart and the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim. Isaiah xi. 13.

Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord;.... Art not thou it which hath dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over? Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come, with singing unto Zion, and everlasting joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

Isaiah li. 9, 10, 11.

Break forth into joy, sing together ye waste places of Jerusalem, for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem, the Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. Isaiah lii. 9, 10. Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with

the voice together shall they sing for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion. Isaiah lii. 8.

At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes saith the Lord.

Zephaniah iii. 20. And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.

Joel ii. 32.

2.-The Restoration of Judah and Israel shall call forth a violent but vain opposition from the Nations of the earth.

But the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

Jeremiah x. 10.

For, behold, in those days, and in that time when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the val

ley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.. .. Behold I will raise them out of the place whither ye bave sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head. Joel iii. 1, 2, 7.

Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the Lord, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. Zeph. iii. 8.

And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the

The valley of Jehoshaphat. The name of Jehoshaphat is very significant, for it means "God judges, or the Judgement of the Lord." This valey is also called the valley of Berachah (or of Blessing;) it is situate south of Jerusalem in the neighbourhood of the wilderness of Tekoa [or of the Trumpet, for so Tekoah means in Hebrew] see 2 Chron. xx. 20-26. And this same valley is in verse 12, prophetically called the valley of decision, or as the margin more pointedly reads it, the valley of threshing, as if alluding to the same event foretold in Isaiah xxx. 32. And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the Lord shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps and in battles of shaking will he fight with it, or against them, as the margin reads it.

mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. (Behold I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.) And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. * Rev. xvi. 12-16.

Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Lord. Let the heathen be awakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for

* Armageddon the Hill country that bounds the vale of Jehoshaphat and both of these were in the wilderness of Tekoah.-Armageddon-This word occurs no where else in the Scriptures excepting here; were it of Latin or Greek origin, it would mean "Buckled in armour" and would then be naturally expressive of the habit of those nations as we find it described by Ezekiel xxxviii, 4, 5. All of them clothed with all sorts of armour, with buckers and with shields, all of them with shield and helmet: But that it is of pure Hebrew Extraction St. John assures us, Rev. xvi. 16. and since all the Hebrew names are derivative, and replete with meaning, let us enquire a little more into its Hebrew etymo logy: Armah in Hebrew signifies" Mountain" but Geddon means, Apple, and sometimes fruit in general; so that this signification will be explanatory of Solomon's Song viii. 5. "Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee. there will I sit to Judge all the heathen round about. Joel iii. 11, 12.

And the word of the Lord came unto me saying, Son of man set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog* the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say, Thus saith the Lord God, Behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company, with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and

* Magog was the name given to one of the grandsons of Noah, namely one of the sons of Japhet; the word itself means "covering": perhaps he was so called in commemoration of the filial act of his father towards his grandfather Noah, for we are told that both Shem and Japhet took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backwards and COVERED their naked father. (see Gen. ix. 23.) Now the Hebrews when giving proper names to their children, always used to name them after something significant, and that Magog (happening to be born about the time of this memorable transaction) should be so surnamed would be reasonable enough: also as Noah was a prophet it may be supposed that this name was given to Magog by his grandfather, prophetically, for such countless numbers were to come of him as would in time cover nearly all the earth, and people the greatest part of the world. This term Magog occurs five times throughout the Scriptures, Gen, x. 2, 1 Chron. i. 5: here, and again in the next chapter, verse 6, and in Rev. xx. 8.
