Tm: enthusiasm awakened by the general amnesty granted on the accession of Pius IX, and his subsequent liberal policy, begins, as might have been reasonably anticipated, to react; and already the actual good, which his measures have efl'ected, is called in question. Heretofore, the barriers raised by despotism to human progress in Italy, have been, in a great measure, effectual: now, whatever motives have actuated the Italian princes and whatever maybe their ultimate designs, the spirit of the age has penetrated the heart of Italy; and it is.too late for mere arbitrary power to oppose her political and social regeneration, although it may ia definitely postpone it. We are therefore justified in indulging san guine though not extravagant hopes, and there are signs of the times which are full of promise for that region of the world.
