into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of."* WE ARE called on to admire the dealings of divine wisdom. Truly may we say with the pious poet

"God moves in a mysterious way,
"His wonders to perform."

WE ARE CALLED ON to witness the hardness of heart, which all of us bear about us till we become the subjects of grace. The very extremest sufferings were insufficient to awaken our beloved friend to a sense of divine things. O how much does it behove us to pray God that he will take away from us all hardness of heart!-WE ARE CALLED ON to witness the transforming influence of the Holy Spirit. Although he was uniformly moral, before he was a subject of grace, yet afterwards what a change took place! meek, patient, resigned, trusting his all in the Lord's hands, he died as he for some years had lived, in full affiance on the merits of a crucified Jesus. The last words he expressed in this world were at once a proof of his being nothing in his own eyes and the Redeemer being his all in all-" None but Christ," said the departing saint, "none but Christ."

the most excellent of the earth, speaks the language of consolation, for while self-gratification mourns his departure, we know that he is eternally happy. Ye who are the relatives of so bright an example, we would at once sympathise and rejoice with you: we would stimulate you to walk in his footsteps; to avouch HIS God, to be YOUR God; to cast your care upon Him who is the father of the fatherless, and defendeth the cause of the widow. Remember what HE said under family bereavement when his elder son met a watery grave: "God is love, the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away." And above all let your love for him below incite you to strive diligently that you may join him above, where separations no more take place.

Finally, let us not forget the improvement held out to oURSELVES. With him we have worshipped here; with him some of us have been intimately acquainted; with us he has often eaten and drank at the Lord's table; he lived a Christian, he died a saint. To what did he ascribe the whole? to grace, sovereign grace; the electing love of God singled him out from eternity; the Lord was with him, though he knew it not, when he traversed the trackless deep; when he lay among the slaughtered heaps; when he languished in an eastern dungeon; when his torture suggested self-destruction, the Lord was with him,

and at last revealed himself to him and in him, and brought him through the furnace purified as silver. Farewell, glorified spirit! may the desire of meeting thee again animate us to follow thy example; may devotion to God, family and personal religion, benevolence to our fellow creatures, and an habitually praying spirit, be evidences to ourselves that we are ripening for glory, and to our survivors, when we have departed this life, that like thee we have entered into the joy of our Lord.

May our lives, through grace, be such, as that when we depart this world, we may leave a similar testimony behind us, of our sure and certain bliss. May the Holy Ghost be our guide and sanctifier, and renew us unto holiness of heart and life; that we too may die the death of the righteous, and that our latter end may be like his.
