Second annual session of the fifth Legislative Assembly, begun and held at Madison, the 7th day of February, A. D. 1848. At 12 o'clock M. the roll of the Council was called by the secretary, and a quorum being in attendance,

On motion of Mr. Lovell,
Hon. H. N. Wells was appointed president pro tem.

Mr. Whitesides moved that William R. Smith be appointed assistant secretary pro tem ;

Which was agreed to.

On motion of Mr. Manahan,
Edward P. Lockhart was appointed sergeant-at-arms pro

tem.

On motion of Mr. White,
William B. Magee was appointed messenger pro tem.

On motion of Mr. Palmer,
George W. Bunce was appointed fireman pro tem.

Mr. Lovell introduced the following resolution, which was adopted, to wit :

"Resolved, That the secretary be directed to inform the house that the council is now organized pro tem, and ready to proceed to business."

Mr. White introduced the following resolution, which was adopted, to wit:

"Resolved, That a committee of two be appointeil to act in conjunttion with a similar conmittee on the part of the house,
