That one thousand six hundred and fifty copies of the above report be printed for the use of the Senate.

On motion of Mr. Campbell,

The above report was referred to the committee on ways and means.
Mr. President,

Laid before the Senate a communication from the Secretary of State, containing a list of the members of the tenth General Assembly.

On motion of Mr. Campbell,

Resolved, That, that part of the communication relating to the members of the Senate, together with the credentials of members,

Be referred to the committee on Elections.

Mr. President,

Laid before the Senate,

Proposals from Messrs. Hammond & Cronenbold, on the subject of the job printing of the Senate,

Which

On motion of Mr. Sterigere,

Was referred to the committee on job printing.

On motion of Mr. Campbell,

Ordered that the sealed proposals for the printing of the Senate, remain unbroken until all are received.

Mr. Sterigere submitted the following,

Resolved, By the Senate, the House of Representaves concuring, that a_joint committee of two on the part of the Senate and four on the part of the House of Representatives, be appointed to contract for the printing of the Laws and Journals of the present General Assembly.

Which was read.

And on motion of Mr. McDaniel,

Was laid on the table..

Mr. Campbell offered the following;

Resolved, That unless expressly ordered, the Secretary shall not spread at large upon the Journals, the reports of committees, nor communications to the Senate, except communications from the Governor of the State,

On motion of Mr. Sterigere,

Was laid on the table.

Mr. Penn, gave notice that he would on Friday next, ask leave to introduce a bill to amend an act entitled an act, to regulate the Treasury Depart

ment.

Mr. Miller gave notice that on Monday next, he would ask leave to introduce a bill supplementary to an act, to incorporate the Osage Mining and Smelting company.

Mr. Grimsley offered the following,

Resolved, That the Governor be requested to lay before the Senate, as soon as practicable, a statement shewing the number of troops called into the service. of the State by the commander in chief, since the adjournment of the last General Assembly.

2nd. The number and rank of the officers of the various corps, with copies of such orders as may have been issued.

3rd. The probable expense attending said military operations, for pay of troops, subsistence &c. Which

On motion of Mr. Hunter,

Were laid on the table.

The following message from the House was received by Mr. McCulloch, enrolling Clerk thereof.

Mr. President,

The House have passed the following resolutions, and ask the concurrence of the Senate therein:

"Resolved, The Senate concurring therein, that the Secretary of State be authorized to employ some suitable person to act as Librarian during the present session of the General Assembly,

That the person so employed shall keep fire and other necessary accommodations, suitable for the use of members, whose duty it shall be to keep the State Library open from 8 o'clock A. M. until 7 o'clock P. M. to be paid out of the contingent fund of both Houses."

Resolved, That the Senate be informed, that the House of Representatives is ready to go into the election of a Senator to the Congress of the United States, when it shall be convenient for them to do so, and that the Representative Hall' on the right of the Speaker is set apart for their reception.

Messrs. Fulkerson, Young of Lafayette, Clark of St. Louis, Acock, Hall, Kincheloe, Primm and Bollinger, have been appointed a committee on enrolled bills on the part of the House.

Mr. Monroe moved,

To take up the resolution of the House relative to Librarian, which

Ou motion of Mr. Sterigere,

Was laid on the table until to-morrow.

Mr. Thompson gave notice,

That on Monday next, he would ask leave to introduce a bill to amend an act entitled an act, to provide for levying and collecting the revenue.

Mr. Rawlins offered the following,

Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed to examine and report to the Senate, the amount of books now in the Library, under the controle of the State, and to ascertain if a suitable room can be prncured for the purposes of a Library,

Which was adopted. And

Messrs. Rawlins, Miller and Jones of Pike, were appointed a committee to carry the above resolution into effect.

On motion of Mr. Miller,

The Senate repaired to the Hall of the House of Representatives for the purpose of electing a Senator for the State of Missouri, to the Congress of the United States.

Mr. President

Took the Speakr's chair and announced the object of the joint meeting.
Mr. Ashby of the Senate, nominated Thomas H. Benton.

Mr. Campbell of the Senate, nominated Abiel Leonard.

The vote was taken, and there appeared

For Mr. Benton 75 votes.

For Mr. Leonard 48 “

Mr. President,

Declared that Thomas H. Benton had received a majority of the votes of both Houses of the General Assembly, and was declared duly elected, a Senator for the State of Missouri in the Congress of the United States, for the term of six years from and after the 3rd day of March 1839.

Whereupon the Senate repaired to its chamber and resumed its session.

Mr. President

Laid before the Senate proposals for printing, from Messrs. Hammond and Cronenbold, Chambers Harris and Knapp, Calvin Gunn, Brown and Lindsay, and Peter G. Glover.

Which on motion of Mr. Ashby,

Were laid on the table.

The Senate took up the resolution of Mr. Sterigere, relative to a joint committee to contract for the printing of the Laws and Journals of the peresent General Assembly.

Which was adopted. And

Messrs. Sterigere and Hunter were appointed the committee on the part of the Senate, to carry the same into effect.

On motion of Mr. Sterigere,

Resolved, That the proposals handed in on the subject of printing, be referred to the joint committee on printing.

Mr. President

Announced the appointment of Messrs. Penn, Campbell and Rawlins, as a committee on the part of the Senate, to join the committee on the part of the House of Representaves "to make settlement of the late Treasurer's accounts remaining unsettled, and cause to be made out and delivered to the persons entitled thereto, a certificate of such settlement, shewing the balance of monies, securities and effects for which he is accountable, and what has been delivered to his successer," in conformity with the resolution heretofore adopted.

On motion,

The Senate adjourned.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22d, 1838.

The Senate met pursuant to adjournment.

On motion of Mr. Monroe,

Resolved, That the committee of the whole on the state of the republic, be discharged from further consideration of the Governor's Message.

Which was decided in the affirmative.

Mr. Hyatt moved,

That the Senate reconsider the vote discharging the committee of the whole from further consideration of the Governor's Message.

The question,

"Will the Senate reconsider the vote aforesaid,"

Was decided affirmatively.

Mr. Turner asked and obtained leave to introduce a bill, to amend an act entitled an act to regulate executions.

Which was read a first time, and ordered to a second reading.

The Senate took up the resolution of the House of Representatives relative to the appointment of a Librarian, which had been made the order of the day. Which on motion of Mr. Sterigere,

Was laid on the table.

On motion of Mr. Sterigere,

The Senate resolved itself into a committee of the whole,

Mr. Ashby in the chair:

After some time spent therein, the committee rose and the chairman reported progress, and asked leave to sit again.

The "question,"

Shall the committee have leave to sit again,

Was decided affirmatively.
