PREFACE.

WE regard it as a favourable symptom of the times, that books of the class to which the present volume belongs are in growing demand. The calls of daily life are, in this busy age, so numerous and pressing, that the masses of the community have no time to devote to the perusal of large bodies of divinity, or, indeed, large books of any kind. It is important, therefore, that something should be provided for them, which may be taken up and readily laid down-which bringing before them a portion of the Word of God, and, illustrating it by anecdote and observation, shall deepen its impression on their minds, and furnish them with a theme of profitable meditation while engaged in the business of the world.

It will be found that in the following pages an attempt has been made suitably to intermingle striking and useful facts, valuable extracts from some of our best divines, and original expositions and practical lessons. Variety also has been studied in the subjects introduced to the reader's notice. Truth will be found addressed to old and young-saint and sinner. There are words of comfort, and words of caution-words of encouragement and words of reproof. There is an enforcement of the duties of social life, and the personal obligations of religion-what we owe to our neighbour, and what we owe to our God.
