LA VENGEANCE ET LA JUSTICE

POURSUIVANT LE CRIME.

Le désir de posséder quelques pièces d'or vient de faire commettre un crime: la victime inanimée est étendue à terre, et le meurtrier cherche à fuir. Mais la lune répand une douce clarté, et déja le coupable est aperçu; il va être saisi et subira bientôt le châtiment que mérite son lâche assassinat.

Deux figures allégoriques planent dans les airs: la Vengeance, un flambeau à la main, éclaire la démarche du coupable, et sa main semble s'avancer pour le saisir la Justice la suit, elle s'apprête à frapper le criminel, dès qu'elle sera convaincue de sa culpabilité.

Ce tableau fut ordonné par le préfet Frochot pour décorer la salle de la cour d'assises du département de la Seine. Prudhon n'avait encore rien fait d'aussi marquant; lorsque ce tableau parut au salon de l'an VIII, il lui mérita beaucoup d'éloges, et c'est alors que le peintre reçut la décoration de la Légiond'Honneur.

VENGEANCE AND JUSTICE

PURSUING CRIME.

The desire of possessing a few pieces of gold has caused the perpetration of a crime: the victim lies lifeless on the ground, and the murderer is seeking to flee. But the moon sheds her mild beams, and the criminal is already perceived: he is on the point of being overtaken, and will soon undergo the punishment he deserves for his cowardly assassination.

Two allegorical figures are hovering in the air : Vengeance, with a torch in her hand, shews the steps of the wretch, and her hand seems advancing to seize him : Justice follows her, and is preparing to strike the criminal, when convinced of his guilt.

This picture was ordered by the prefect Frochot, to ornament the hall of the assize court of the department of the Seine. Till then, Prudhon had done nothing so striking: when it appeared in the exhibition of the year vIII, it drew on him great praise, and he, at the same time, received the decoration of the Legion of Honour.

It has been engraved by M. B. Roger, and done in lithography by Motte.
