HYMN LI.

Thine Eyes shall see the King in his
Beauty. Isaiah, xxxiii. 17.
HOULD nature's charms to please
the eye,

SH

In sweet assemblage join,
All nature's charms would droop and die,
Jesus, compared with thine.
Vain were her fairest beams display'd,
And vain her blooming store;
Her brightness languishes to shade,
Her beauty is no more.

bs But ah, how far from mortal sight
The Lord of glory dwells!
A veil of interposing night
NE His radiant face conceals.
40 could my longing spirit rise
On strong immortal wing,
And reach thy palace in the skies,
My Saviour and my King!
There thousands worship at thy feet,
And there (divine employ !)
The triumphs of thy love repeat,
In songs of endless joy..

Thy presence beams eternal day
TO'er all the blissful place;
Who would not drop this load of clay,
And die to see thy face?

The Excellency and Sufficiency of the
Scriptures.

ATHER of mercies! in thy word
What endless glory shines!

and or ever be thy name adored
For these celestial lines.

Here may the wretched sons of want a Exhaustless riches find;

Riches above what earth can grant,
And lasting as the mind.

Tame 3 Here the fair tree of knowledge grows,

[ocr errors]

And yields a free repast,
Sublimer sweets than nature knows
Invite the longing taste.

Here the Redeemer's welcome voice
Spreads heavenly peace around;
And life, and everlasting joys
Attend the blissful sound.

5 O may these heavenly pages be
My ever dear delight;
And still new beauties may I see,
And still increasing light.

Divine Instructor, gracious Lord,
tha Be thou for ever near;.
Teach me to love thy sacred word,
And view my Saviour there.

The Seasons crowned with Goodness.
Psalm lxv. 11.

ETERNAL source of every joy!
Well may thy praise our lips employ,
While in thy temple we appear,
To hail thee, sov'reign of the year.

12 Wide as the wheels of nature roll,
Thy hand supports and guides the
whole:

The sun is taught by thee to rise,
And darkness when to veil the skies.
3 The flowery spring, at thy command,
Perfumes the air, and paints the land;
The summer rays with vigour shine
To raise the corn and cheer the vine.
4 Thy hand in autumn richly pours
Through all our coast redundant stores;
And winters, soften'd by thy care,
No more the face of horror wear.
5 Seasons, and months, and weeks, and
days

Demand successive songs of praise;
And be the grateful homage paid,
With morning light and evening shade.
6 Here in thy house let incense rise,
And circling sabbaths bless our eyes,
Till to those lofty heights we soar,
Where days and years revolve no more.

A Funeral Thought. TARK! from the tombs, a mournful sound,

My ears, attend the cry:

Ye living men, come view the ground
'Where you must shortly lie.

Princes, this clay must be your bed,
In spite of all your towers!
The tall, the wise, the reverend head
'Must lie as low as ours.'

3 Great God! is this our certain doom?
And are we still secure?

Still walking downward to the tomb;
And yet prepare no more?

4 Grant us the power of quickening
grace,

To fit our souls to fly;

Then when we drop this dying flesh,
We'll rise above the sky.

HYMN LV.AEES
A Charity Hymn.

LORD of life, all praise excelling,

Thou, in glory unconfined,
Deign'st to make thy humble dwelling
With the poor of humble mind.
2 As thy love, through all creation,
Beams like thy diffusive light;
So the scorn'd and humble station

Shrinks before thine equal sight.
3 Thus thy care, for all providing,

Warm'd thy faithful prophet's tongue;
Who, the lot of all deciding mod
To thy chosen Israel sung:

4 When thine harvest yields thee plea-
sure, the trotromOTO 3
Thou the golden sheaf shalt bind;
To the poor belongs the treasurer
Of the scatter'd ears behind.

Chorus.

These thy God ordains to bless The widow and the fatherless. 5 When thine olive plants increasing, Pour their plenty o'er thy plain, Grateful thou shalt take the blessing, But not search the bow again.

Chorus. These, &c.

6 When thy favour'd vintage flowing,
Gladdens thy autumnal scene,
Own the bounteous band bestowing,
But thy vines the poor shall glean.
Chorus. These, &c.
7 Still we read thy word declaring
Mercy, Lord, thine own decree;
Mercy, every sorrow sharing,

Warms the heart resembling thee. 8 Still the orphan and the stranger, 'Still the widow owns thy care, Screen'd by thee in every danger, Heard by thee in every prayer. Hallelujah. Amen.

15 From Christ their varied gifts derive, And, fed by him, their graces live; Whilst guarded by his potent hand, Amidst the rage of hell they stand. 6 So shall the bright succession run, Through all the courses of the sun; Whilst unborn churches, by their care, Shall rise and flourish large and fair. 7 Jesus, our Lord, their hearts shall know

The spring whence all these blessings flow;

Pastors and people shout his praise, Through the long round of endless days.

Prayer for Ministers.

ATHER of mercies! bow thine ear, Attentive to our earnest prayer; We plead for those who plead for thee, Successful pleaders may they be! 2 How great their work, how vast ther

charge!

Do thou their anxious souls enlarge; Their best acquirements are our gain, We share the blessings they obtain. 3 Clothe, then, with energy divine, bost Their words, and let those words be thine;

To them thy sacred truth reveal, Suppress their fear, inflame their zeal 4 Teach them to sow the precious seed, Teach them thy chosen flock to feed; Teach them immortal souls to gain Souls that will well reward their pain. 5 Let thronging multitudes around, Hear from their lips the joyful sound; In humble strains thy grace implore, And feel thy new-creating power. 6 Let sinners break their massy chains, Distressed souls forget their pains! Let light through distant realms be spread, the dark Tam PANKO And Zion rear her drooping head.

Whenever the Hymns are used at the celebration of divine service, a certain portion or pers tions of the Psalms of David in metre shall also be sung

Sing to the Lord a new-made song
Sing to the Lord a new-made song
Speak, O ye judges of the earth
Sure wicked fools must needs suppose
That man is blest who stands in awe
Thee I will bless, my God and King

The Lord hath spoke, the mighty

The Lord himself, the mighty Lord
The Lord, the only God, is great
The Lord to thy request attend
The Lord unto my Lord thus spake
The man is blest that fears the Lord
The spacious earth is all the Lord's
The wicked fools must sure suppose.
