from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. 3 And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel? Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying,

15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.

17. What arguments are urged by those who regard the demoniacs mentioned in the New Testament as simply diseased or deranged?

That fallen angels are already shut up: JUDE.

And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, be hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

2 PETER ii.

*For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, 'and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

18. How may it be proved that the demoniacs spoken of in the New Testament were really possessed of evil spirits?

(a) They distinguish between possession and disease: res kakws iXovтas, kai της δαιμονιζομένες.

MARK i.

But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her. And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.

34 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.

33 And all the city was gathered together at the door. 34 And he healed many that

were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came insomuch that they questioned among out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, themselves, saying, What thing is this?

what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the

devils to speak, because they knew him.

MARK ix.

25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. 28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. MATT. viii.

32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in

the waters.

31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.

MARK ix.

And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

(e) The number of demons mentioned: MARK XVI.

9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

(f) Went out into the swine: LUKE viii.

31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.

32 And there was there an herd of

many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.

33 Then went the devils out of the man,

and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

CHAPTER XIII.

PROVIDENCE.

4. On what ground is it assumed | the earth, and all things that are that the universe would not continue therein, the seas, and all that is to exist unless constantly upheld by therein, and thou preservest them God? all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee.

This doctrine is clearly affirmed by Scripture:

HEB. i.

2

1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For anto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

NEH. ix.

Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host,

shioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me. 9 Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again? 10 Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? 11 Thou hast clothed me with skin and

flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.

12 Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

13 And these things hast thou hid in thine heart I know that this is with thee. PSALM CİV.

24 O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. 25 So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. 26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.

27 These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season. 28 That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.

29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. 31 The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works.

ACTS xvii.

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the

times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27 that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

10. Prove from Scripture that the providence of God extends over the

natural world.
