CHAPTER XXXII.

SANCTIFICATION.

1. What sense do the words, ayos, holy, and aɣáčev, to sanctify, bear in the Scriptures?

(A) The word aytoç signifies, devoted to the gods. (B) Persons: pious, pure, sanctified, holy. (y) Place: set apart for worship, emphatically the temple. The Neut. Plu. is once used for the inner sanctuary, the holy of holies, and once for the holy heavens, where the Divine presence is more peculiarly manifested. From &, to venerate, or a neg. and yñ, the earth:

(a) Holy (Third Person of the Trinity): MATT. i.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came to gether, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

MATT. iii.

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.

LUKE iii.

16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

11 But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. LUKE i.

15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

ACTs i. 2.

1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: For John truly baptized with water; but Ghost not many days hence. ye shall be baptized with the Holy

16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake be fore concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

ACTS ii.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of Holy Ghost.

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. 18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
