Bibliography 23 November 1900

PREFACE The purpose of this list is to show briefly and clearly the resources of the New York state library in Connecticut local history. The arrangement of counties is according to the Decimal classification, and under the counties alphabetically by towns; histories of villages being included under the township of which they form a part. Dates of incorporation and of origin are given, also the name of the parent town in cases of subdivision. A number of works on Connecticut as a whole are grouped at the beginning as a brief selection for ready reference.

The term local history is employed in its restricted sense, allied topics of education, manufactures, commerce, geology, Indians, etc., being omitted. The ecclesiastical affairs of the towns, however, have been so closely interwoven with civil history, specially in early days, that all such material is incorporated. Genealogies of old Connecticut families and individual biographies, though of considerable historical value, are excluded because of their great number and as outside the strict scope of this list, and also because families and persons of sufficient importance in a locality for separate study are indicated in general chapters or works. Among biographies which should not be overlooked is Sprague's Annals of the American pulpit. A. P. C. Griffin's indexes and Poole's Index have been freely used.

Important historical events like the Danbury expedition and the storming of Fort Griswold are treated in separate works, and therefore references have not been given to general histories.

Since about 1888 the city directories very often include lists of persons who have died or married during the year, and in some cases also lists of removals from town.
