MERRILL Ph.D. State museum 1 New York State Library Bulletin 60 May 1901 BIBLIOGRAPHY 26 FRÖBEL AND THE KINDERGARTEN PREFACE The aim has been to include in this list everything (with the few exceptions below) published in the English language on Fröbel and the kindergarten, including kindergarten periodicals, parts of books and scattered articles. The annual reports of the United States commissioner of education have been indexed as well as the proceedings of the National educational association; but reports of kindergarten associations and material in reports of state and city boards of public instruction have been omitted on account of inability to make such lists complete. It is hoped that users of this bibliography will bear in mind that in attempting to make it complete many entries have been made that are valuable only in their relation to the whole. If mistakes are found in arrangement of entries, it is largely due to the fact that many of the books included were not seen, and classification from title must necessarily be faulty. Among the libraries in which the books examined were found are the Library of congress, the Astor library, and the libraries of the Peabody institute of Baltimore, Columbia university, Teachers college, New York state normal college, and the Kindergarten training school of Baltimore. The largest collection was seen at the publishing house of E. Steiger & Co. of New York city, who kindly allowed access to their entire stock of Fröbel and kindergarten literature.
