Joshua's exhortation". Joshua. 5 And the LORD your God he fball ex pel them from before you, and drive them from out of your fight, and ye fhall poffefs their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you. 6 Be ye therefore very couragious to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Mofes, that ye turn not afide therefrom, to the right hand or to the left, 7 That ye come not among thefe nations, thefe that remain amongst you,neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor caufe to fwear by them, neither ferve them, nor bow your felves unto them : 8 But cleave unto the LORD your God, às ye have done unto this day. 9 For the LORD hath driven out from before you, great nations and ftrong: but as for you, no man hath been able to ftand before you unto this day. 10 One man of you fhall chafe a thoufand for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promifed you. II Take good heed therefore unto your felves, that ye love the LORD your God. 12 Elfe if ye do in any wife go back, and cleave unto the remnant of thefe nations, even thefe that remain among you, and all make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you: 13 Know for a certainty, that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of thefe nations from before you; but they fhall be fnares and traps unto you, and fcourges in your fides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath gi ven you. 14 And behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth, and ye know in all your hearts, and in all your fouls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God fpake concerning you, all are come to pafs un to you, and not one thing hath failed thereof. Is Therefore it fhall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you,which the LORD your God promifed you: fo fhall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have deftroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you. 16 When ye have tranfgreffed the cove nant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and ferved other gods, and bowed your felves to them: then fhall the anger of the LORD he kindled against you, and ye hall perish quickfrom off the good land which he hath nato you He repeateth Gods benefits CHAP. XXIV. ANd ofhua gathered all the tribe to Shechem, and called the elders of Ifrael, and for their he and for their judges, and for their offi and they prefented themselves before 2 And Joshua faid unto all the pec Thus faith the LORD God of Ifrael, 1 fathers dwelt on the other fide of the f in old time, even Terah the father of braham, and the father of Nachor: they ferved other gods. 3 And I took your father Abraham f the other fide of the floud, and led throughout all the land of Canaan, multiplied his feed, and gave him Ifas 4 And I gave unto Ifaac, Jacob Efau and I gave unto Efau mount to poffefs it; but Jacob and his chil went down into Egypt. s I fent Mofes alfo and Aaron, a plagued Egypt, according to that w I did amongst them and afterwa brought you out. 6 And I brought your fathers out o gypt: and you came unto the fea, and Egyptians pursued after your fathers, chariots and horfemen unto the Red f 7 And when they cried unto the Lc he put darkness between you and th gyptians, and brought the fea upon t and covered them; and your eyes! feen what I have done in Egypt: an dwelt in the wilderness a long feafon 8 And I brought you into the lan the Amorites, which dwelt on the c fide Jordan, and they fought with and I gave them into your hand, the might poffefs their land, and I deftro them from before you. 9 Then Balak the son of Zippor kir Moab, arofe and warred against Ifrae fent and called Balaam the fon of Bes curfe you : 10 But I would not hearken unto laam, therefore he bleffed you ftill: delivered you out of his hand. 11 And ye went over Jordan, and d unto Jericho: and the men of Jer fought against you, the Amorites, and Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and Hittites, and the Girgafhites, the vites, and the Jebufites, and I delive them into your hand. 12 And I fent the hornet before which drave them out from before even the two kings of the Amorites not with thy fword, nor with thy bo 13 And I have given you a land which ye did not labour, and cities u ye built not, and ye dwell in them the vineyards, and olive-yards whic planted not, do ye eat. and reneweth the covenant. Chap. j. 14 Now therefore,fear the LORD, and rve him in fincerity and in truth,and put way the gods which your fathers ferved n the other fide of the floud, and in Eypt: and ferve ye the LORD. 15 And if it feem evil unto you to ferve he LORD, choose you this day whom you will ferve, whether the gods which your ithers ferved, that were on the other fide f the floud, or the gods of the Amorites, 1 whofe land ye dwell; but as for me and ay houfe, we will ferve the LORD. 16 And the people answered and faid, God forbid that we should forfake the LORD, to ferve other gods. 17 For the LORD our God, he it is that rought us up, and our fathers out of the and of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did thofe great figns in our ight, and preferved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the peo ale through whom we paffed. 18 And the LORD drave out from beore us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we o ferve the LORD, for he is our God. 19 And Joshua faid unto the people, Ye pnnot ferve the LORD; for he is an holy God: he is a jealous God, he will not for Live your tranfgreffions, nor your fins. 20 If ye forlake the LORD, and ferve trange gods, then he will turn, and do you hurt, and confume you, after that he Tath done you good. at And the people faid unto Joshua, Nay, but we will ferve the LORD. 22 And Joshua faid unto the people, Ye e witreffes against your felves, that ye have chofen you the LORD to ferve him. and they faid, We are witneffes. 23 Now therefore put away (faid he) he ftrange gods which are among you, and nline your heart unto the LORD God of Erael. N Joshua's death and buriat. 24 And the people faid unto Joshua,The LORD our God will we ferve, and his voice will we obey. 25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and fet them a ftatute and an ordinance in Shechem. 26 And Joshua wrote thefe words in the book of the law of God, and took a great ftone, and fet it up there under an oak, that was by the fanctuary of the LORD. 27 And Joshua said unto all the people. Behold, this ftone fhall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, left ye deny your God. 28 So Joshua let the people depart, eve ry man unto his inheritance. 29 And it came to pafs after thefe things, that Joshua the fon of Nun the fervant of the LORD died, being an hundred and ten years old. 30 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-ferah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north-fide of the hill of Gaah. 31 And Ifrael ferved the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Ifrael. 32 And the bones of Jofeph, which the children of Ifrael brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the fons of Hamor the father of Shechem, for an hundred pieces of filver; and it became the inheritance of the children ot Jofeph. 33 And Eleazar the fon of Aaron died, and they buried him in a hill that pertain eth to Phinehas his fon, which was given him in mount Ephraim. TOW after the death of Jofhua, it came to pafs, that the chil dren of Ifrael asked the LORD, faying, Who fhall go up for us against the Canaanites firft to fight against them? 2 And the LORD faid, Judah fhall go p: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. 3 And Judah faid unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites, and 1 likewife will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him. 4 And Judah went up, and the LORD delivered the Canaanites, and the Perizzites into their hand: and they flew of them in Bezek ten thousand men. 5 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they flew the Canaanites, and the Perizzites. 6 But Adoni-bezek fled, and they purfued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs, and his great toes. 7 And Adoni-bezek faid, Threescore and ten kings having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered the meat un der my table: as I have done, fo G hath requited me. II And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir; (and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-fepher) 12 And Caleb faid, He that fmiteth Kirjath-fepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achfah my daughter to wife. 13 And Othniel the fon of Kenaz Calebs younger brother took it: and he gave him Achfah his daughter to wife. 14 And it came to pafs when the came to him, that he moved him to ask of her father a field and the lighted from off her afs; and Caleb faid unto her, What wilt thou? 15 And the faid unto him, Give me a bleffing: for thou haft given me a fouthland, give me allo fprings of water. And Caleb gave her the upper fprings, and the nether fprings. 16 And the children of the Kenite, Mofes father in law, went up out of the city of palm-trees, with the children of Judab, into the wilderness of Judah, which tieth in the fouth of Arad, and they went and dwelt among the people. 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they flew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly deftroyed it: (and the name of the city was called Hormah) 18 Alfo Judah took Gaza with the coaft thereof, and Askelon with the coaft thereof, and Ekron with the coaft thereof. 19 And the LORD was with Judah, and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain, but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. 20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Mofes faid: and he expelled thence the three fons of Anak. 21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebufites that inhabited Jerufalem: but the Jebufites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerufalem unto this day. 22 And the houfe of Jofeph, they went up againft Beth-el: and the RD wa with them. 24 And the fpies faw a man come for out of the city, and they faid unto hi Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance in the city, and we will fhew thee mercy. 25 And when he thewed them the e trance into the city, they fmote the cit with the edge of the fword: but they l go the man and all his family. 26 And the man went into the landi the Hittites, and build a city, and calle the name thereof Luz: which is the nam thereof unto this day. 27 Neither did Manaffeh drive out inhabitants of Beth-fhean and her towns,n Taanach and her towns,nor the inhabitan of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitan of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhab tants of Megiddo and her towns: but th Canaanites would dwell in that land. 28 And it came to pass when Ifrael wa ftrong, that they put the Canaanites to tr bute, and did not utterly drive them out. 29 Neither did Ephraim drive out th Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but th Caraan tes dwelt in Gezer among them. 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitant of Nahalol: but the Canaanites dwelt a mong them, and became tributaries. 31 Neither did Ather drive out the in habitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants o Zidon, nor of Ablab, nor of Achzib, no Helbah, nor Aphik, nor of Rehob : 32 But the Aherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land for they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-fhemefh, nor the inha bitants of Beth-anath,but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: neverthelefs,the inhabitants of Beth themesh and of Beth-anath became tribu taries unto them. 34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not fuffer them to come down to the valley 35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim yet the hand of the houfe of Jofeph pre vailed, fo that they became tributaries. 36 And the coaft of the Amorites wa from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward. CHAP. II. of from Gilgal to Bochim, and faid, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I (ware unto your fathers; and I faid, I will never break my covenant with you. The Ifraelites Chap. iij. 2 And ye shall make no league with the nhabitants of this land, you shall throw lown their altars: but ye have not obeymy voice, why have ye done this? 3 Wherefore I alfo faid, I will not drive them out from before you: but they shall be as thorns in your fides, and their gods fhall be a fnare unto you. 4 And it came to pafs when the angel of the LORD ipake thefe words unto all the children of Ifrael, that the people ift up their voice, and wept. s And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they facrificed there into the LORD. 6¶ And when Joshua had let the people , the children of Ifrael went every man nto his inheritance to poffefs the land. 7 And the people feived the LORD all The days of Joua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had feen all the great works of the LORD, that he d.d for Ifrael. 8 And Joshua the fon of Nun, the fervant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. 9 And they buried him in the border his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north-fide of the hill Gaah. 10 And alfo all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arole another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the Ifrael. obftinate idolatry. felves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way, which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD, but they did not fo. 18 And when the LORD raised thera up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them our of the hand of their enemies, all the days of the judge: (for it repented the LORD, be caufe of their groanings, by reafon of them that oppreffed them, and vexed them) 19 And it came to pafs when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to ferve them, ard to bow down unto them: they ceafed not from their own doings, nor from their ttubborn way. 20 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Ifrael, and he faid, Because that this people hath tranfgreffed my covenaat which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkned unto my voice: 21 I alfo will not henceforth drive out any from before them, of the nations which Joshua left when he died: 22 That through them I may prove Ifrael, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. 23 Therefore the LORD left thofe nations, without driving them out haftily, neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua. CHA P. III. Ow orks which he had done for Iffad did N the fe are the nations which the evil in the fight of the LORD, and ferved Baalim: 12 And they forfook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt,and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themfelves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger. 13 And they forfook the LORD, and Eved Baal and Ashtaroth. 14 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Ifrael, and he delivered them into the hands of (poilers that spoiled them, and he fold them into the bands of their enemies round about, fo that they could Aot any longer ftand before their enemies. 15 Whitherfoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had faid, and as the LORD had fworn unto them: and they were greatly diftreffed. 16€ Nevertheless, the LORD raifed Up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of thofe that fpoiled them. 17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed them (even as many of Ifrael as had not known all the wars of Canaan; 2 Only that the generations of the children of Ifrael might know to teach them war, at the leaft fuch as before knew nothing thereof) 3 Nimely, five lords of the Philiftines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon, unto the entring in of Hamath. 4 And they were to prove Ifrael by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Mofes. sAnd the children of Ifrael dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebufites: 6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their fons, and ferved their gods. 7 And the children of Ifrael did evil in the fight of the LORD, and forgal LORD their God, and ferved Baalı the groves. Ehud killeth Eglon Deborah judgeth Tradi 8Therefore the anger of the LORD porch, and fhut the doors of the parlo was hot againft Ifrael, and he fold them in- upon him, and locked them. to the hand of Chufhan-rifhathaim king of Mefopotamia: and the children of Ifrael ferved Chufhan rifhathaim eight years, 24 When he was gone out, his fervan came; and when they faw, that behold the doors of the parlour were locked,the faid, Surely he covereth his feet in h 9 And when the children of Ifrael cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a fummer-chamber. deliverer to the children of Ifrael, who delivered them, even Othniel, the fon of Kenaz, Calebs younger brother. 10 And the fpirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Ifrael, and went out to war; and the LORD delivered Chuhan-rifhathaim king of Mefopotamia into his hand and his hand prevailed againft Chufhan-rishathaim. It And the land had reft forty years: and Othniel the son of Kenaz died. 12 And the children of Ifrael did evil again in the fight of the LORD: and the LORD ftrengthned Eglon the king of Moab againft Ifrael, because they had done evil in the fight of the LORD. 13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon, and Amalek, and went and fmote Ifrael, and poffeffed the city of palm-trees. 14 So the children of Ifrael ferved Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. IS But when the children of Ifrael cried unto the LORD, the LORD raifed them up a deliverer, Ehud the fon of Gera,a Benjamite, a man left-handed: and by him the children of Ifrael fent a prefent unto Eglon the king of Moab. 16 But Ehud made him a dagger (which had two edges) of a cubit length, and he did gird it under his raiment, upon his right thigh. 17 And he brought the prefent unto Eglon king of Moab; and Eglon was a very fat man. 18 And when he had made an end to offer the prefent, he fent away the people that bare the prefent. 19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and faid, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who faid, Keep filence. And all that flood by him, went out from him. 20 And Ehud came unto him, and he was fitting in a fummer-parlour which he had for himself alone: and Ehud faid, I have a meffage from God unto thee. And he arofe out of his feat. 21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thruft it into his belly. 22 And the haft alfo went in after the blade: and the fat clofed upon the blade, fo that he could not draw the dagger out his belly, and the dirt came out. Then Ehud went forth through the 25 And they tarried till they were afha med: and behold, he opened not the doo of the parlour, therefore they took a ke and opened them: and behold, their lor was fallen down dead on the earth. 26 And Ehud efcaped while they tar ried: and paffed beyond the quarries, and efcaped unto Seirath. 27 And it came to pafs when he wa come, that he blew a trumpet in th mountain of Ephraim, and the childre of lfrael went down with him from th mount, and he before them. 28 And he faid unto them, Follow af ter me: for the LORD hath delivered you enemies the Moabites into your hand. An they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and fuffer ed not a man to pass over. 29 And they flew of Moab at tha time about ten thousand men, all lufty and all men of valour, and there efcaped not a man. 30 So Moab was fubdued that day un der the hand of Ifrael: and the land had reft fourfcore years. 31 And after him was Shamgar the fon of Anath, which flew of the Phili ftines fix hundred men with an ox-goad and he alfo delivered Ifrael. CHAP. IV. evil in the fight of the LORD whe Ehud was dead. 2 And the LORD fold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reign ed in Hazor, the captain of whofe hof Wa Sifera, which dwelt in Harotheth o the Gentiles. 3 And the children of Ifrael cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred cha riots of iron, and twenty years he mighti ly oppreffed the children of Ifrael. 4 And Deborah a prophetess,the wife of Lapidoth, the judged Ifrael at that time 5 And the dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah, between Ramah and Beth-e in mount Ephraim: and the children of Ifrael came up to her for judgment. 6 And the fent and called Barak the for of Abinoam, out of Kadeh-Naphtali, and faid unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Ifrael commanded, faying, Go,and draw to ward mount Tabor,and take with thee ten thoufand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulan ?
