CHAP. L. Nd Jofeph fell upon his fathers face, and wept upon him, and kiffed him. 2 And Jofeph commanded his fervants the phyficians to embalm his father: and the phyficians embalmed Ifrael.` 3 And forty days were fulfilled for him (for fo are fulfilled the days of thofe which are embalmed) and the Egyptians mourned for him threefcore and ten days. 4 And when the days of his mourning were paft, Jofeph fpake unto the houfe of Pharaoh, faying, if now I have found grace in your eyes, fpeak, I pray you in the ears of Pharaoh, faying, Is My father made me fwear, faying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me, in the land of Canaan, there fhalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. 6 And Pharaoh faid, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee fwear. 7 And Jofeph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the fervants of Pharaoh, the elders of his houfe, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8 And all the houfe of Jofeph, and his brethren,and his fathers houfe: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Gothen. 9 And there went up with him both chariots and horfemen: and it was a very great company. 10 And they came to the threshing.. floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very fore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father feven days. II And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, faw the mourning in the cor of Atad, they faid, This grievous mourning to the Egyptians : wherefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond Jordan. 12 And his fons did unto him according as he commanded them. 13 For his fons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a poffeffion of a burying-place, of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. 14 And Jofeph returned into Egypt, he and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. 15 And when Jofephs brethren faw that their father was dead, they faid, Jofeph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. 16 And they fent meffengers unto Jofeph, faying, Thy father did command before he died, faying, 17 So fhall ye fay unto Jofeph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trefpafs of thy brethren, and their fin; for they did unto thee evil: And now, we pray thee, forgive the trefpafs of the fervants of the God of thy father. And Jofeph wept when they fpake unto him. N 18 And his brethren alfo went and f down before his face: and they said, hold, we be thy fervants. 19 And Jofeph faid unto them, Fe not: for am I in the place of God? 20 But as for you, ye thought evil gainft me; but God meant it unto goo to bring to pafs, as it is this day, to fa much people alive. 21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will no rifh you,and your little ones. And he con forted them, and fpake kindly unto them 22 And Jofeph dwelt in Egypt, h and his fathers houfe: and Jofeph live an hundred and ten years. 23 And Jofeph faw Ephraims childre of the third generation: the children all of Machir, the fon of Manaffeh, we brought up upon Jofephs knees. 24 And Jofeph faid unto his brethren, die:and God will furely vifit you,and brin you out of this land, unto the land whic he fware to Abraham,to Ifaac, and to Jacol 25 And Jofeph took an oath of the chi dren of Ifrael, faying, God will furel vifit you, and ye shall carry up my bone from hence. 26 So Jofeph died, being an hundre and ten years old: and they embalme him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. The Second Book of MOSES, called EXODUS. CHAP. I. OW thefe are the names of the children of Ifrael which came into Egypt, every man and his houfhold came with Jacob. 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, 3 Iffachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad and Afher. s And all the fouls that came out of the Toyns of Jacob, were feventy fouls: for Jofeph was in Egypt already. 6 And Jofeph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. 7 And the children of Ifrael were fruitful, and increafed abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. 8 Now there arofe up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Jofeph. 9 And he faid unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Ifrael are mo and mightier than we. 10 Come on, let us deal wifely with them:left they multiply, and it come to pafs, that when there falleth out any war, they joy nalfo unto our enemies and fight against us, and fo get them up out of the land. And the were grieved because of the children Ifrael. 13 And the Egyptians made the chi dren of Ifrael to ferve with rigour. 14 And they made their lives bitte with hard bondage, in morter, and i brick, and in all manner of fervice in th field: all their fervice wherein they mad them ferve, was with rigour, Is And the king of Egypt fpake to th Hebrew midwives (of which the nam of one was Shiphrah, and the name of th other Puah :) 16 And he faid, When ye do the offic of a midwife to the Hebrew women, an fee them upon the ftools, if it be a for then ye shall kill him, but if it be a daugh ter, then the fhall live. 17 But the midwives feared God, an did not as the king of Egypt commande them, but faved the men children alive 18 And the king of Egypt called f the midwives, and faid unto them, Wh have ye done this thing, and have fave the men children alive? He fleeth to Midian. 19 And the midwives faid unto Pha- 13 And when he went out the fecond raoh, Because the Hebrew women are not day, behold two men of the Hebrews as the Egyptian women: for they are live- ftrove together: and he faid to him that ly, and are delivered ere the midwives did the wrong, Wherefore fmiteft thou come in unto them. thy fellow? 20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. 21 And it came to pafs, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houfes. 22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, faying, Every fon that is born ye fhall caft into the river, and every daughter ye fhall fave alive. CHA P. II. 14 And he faid, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendeft thou to kill me, as thou killedft the Egyptian? and Mofes feared, and said, Surely, this thing is known. Is Now when Pharaoh heard this thing he fought to flay Mofes. But Mofes fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he fat down by a well. 16 Now the priest of Midian had feven Nd there went a man of the houfe daughters: and they came and drew wa ter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived, and bare afon: and when the faw him that he was a goodly child, the hid him three months. 3 And when the could not longer hide him, he took for him an ark of bulrufhes, and daubed it with flime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and the laid it in the flags by the rivers brink. 4 And his fifter ftood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. sAnd the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash her felf at the river, and her maidens walked along by the rivers fide: and when the faw the ark among the flags, the fent her maid to fetch it. 6 And when he had opened it, the faw the child: and behold, the babe wept. And he had compaffion on him, and faid, This is one of the Hebrews children. 7 Then faid his fifter to Pharaohs daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that the may nurfe the child for thee? 8 And Pharaohs daughter faid unto her, Go. And the maid went and called the childs mother. 9 And Pharaohs daughter faid unto her, Take this child away, and nurfe it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the Woman took the child, and nurfed it. him unto Pharaohs daughter, and he be to And the child grew, and the brought came her fon. Call him, that he may eat bread. 21 And Mofes was content to dwell with the man and he gave Mofes Zipporah his daughter. 22 And the bare him a fon, and he calfed his name Gershom: for he faid, I have been a ftranger in a ftrange land. 23 And it came to pafs in procefs of time, that the king of Egypt died, and the children of Ifrael fighed by reafon of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God, by reafon of the bondage. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembred his covenant with Abra ham, with Ifaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God looked upon the children of Ifrael, and God had refpect unto them. CHAP. III. his father in law, the prieft of MiOw Mofes kept the flock of Jethro dian: and he led the flock to the backfide of the defert, and came to the moun tain of God, even to Horeb. 2 And the angel of the LORD appears ed unto him in a flame of fire out of the midft of a bush: and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not confumed 3 And Mofes faid, I will now turn afide, and fee this great fight, why t bush is not burnt, Mofes fent to deliver Ifrael: Exodus. His rod and leprofie. 4 And when the LORD faw that he to me,faying, I have surely vifited you, a turned afide to fee, God called unto him feen that which is done to you in Egypt. out of the midft of the bufh, and faid,Mofes, Mofes. And he faid, Here am I. 5 And he faid, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy fhoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou ftande ft is holy ground. 6 Moreover he faid, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God Jacob. And Mofes hid his face: for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD faid, I have furely feen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry, by reafon of their task-mafters: for I know their forrows. i 8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land, unto a good land and a large,unto a land flowing with milk and hony; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 Now therefore behold, the cry of the children of Ifrael is come unto me: and I have alfo feen the oppreffion wherewith the Egyptians appress them. 10 Come now therefore, and I will fend thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayeft bring forth my people the children of If zael out of Egypt. II And Mofes faid unto God, Who 17 And I have faid, I will bring y up out of the affliction of Egypt, unto t land of the Canaanites, and the Hittite and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, a the Hivites, and the Jebufices, unto a lar flowing with milk and hony. 18 And they shall hearken to thy voic and thou shalt come, thou and the elde of Ifrael unto the king of Egypt, and yo fhall fay unto him, The LORD God of th Hebrews hath met with us; and now l us go (we beseech thee) three days jou ney into the wilderness, that we may f crifice to the Lord our God. 19¶ And I am fure that the king Egypt will not let you go, no, not by mighty hand. 20 And I will ftretch out my hand and fmite Egypt with all my wonder which I will do in the midft thereof: an after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people favou in the fight of the Egyptians: and it tha come to pafs, that when ye go, ye tha not go empty: 22 But every woman shall borrow of he neighbour, and of her that fojourneth in her houfe, jewels of filver, and jewels a gold, and raiment; and ye shall put then upon your fons,and upon your daughters and ye shall fpoil the Egyptians. CHA P. IV. em I, that I fhould go.unto Pharaoh, and ANd Mofes answered, and faid, Bu that I fhould bring forth the children of Ifrael cut of Egypt? 12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee, and this fall be a token unto thee,that I have fent thee: When thou haft brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye fhall ferve God upon this mountain. 13 And Mofes faid unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Ifrael, and fhall fay unto them, The God of your fathers hath fent me unto you, and they fhall fay to me, What is his name? What fhall I fay unto them? 14 And God faid unto Mofes, I AM THAT I AM: and he faid, Thus fhalt thou fay unto the children of Ifrael, AM hath fent me unto you. 15 And God faid moreover unto Mofes, Thus fhalt thou fay unto the children of Ifrael, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob hath fent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. 16. Go and gather the elders of Ifrael together, and lay unto them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abra mo, of Ifaac, and of Jacob, appeared un behold they will not believe me, no hearken unto my voice: for they will fay The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the LORD faid unto him, What is that in thine hand? and he faid, A rod. 3 And he faid, Caft it on the ground and he caft it on the ground,and it became a ferpent: and Mofes fled from before it. 4 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Pu forth thine hand, and take it by the tail And he put forth his hand and caught it and it became a rod in his hand. s That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abra ham the God of Maac, and the God of Ja cob hath appeared unto thee. 6 And the LORD faid furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bofom, and he put his hand into his bofom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as fnow. 7 And he faid, Put thine hand into thy bofom again: and he put his hand into his bofom again, and plucked it out of his botom, and behold, it was turned a gain as his other flesh. 8 And it fhall come to pafs, if they wil not believe thee, neither hearken to the map. oice of the firft fign, that they will believe the voice of the latter fign. 9 And it shall come to pafs, if they will not believe alfo thefe two figns, neither bearken unto thy voice, that thou fhalt take of the water of the river, and pour upon the dry-land: and the water which thou takeft out of the river, shall become bbod upon the dry-land. 14 And Mofes faid unto the LORD, Omy Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor fince thou haft fpoken unto thy fervant: but I am flow of speech, and of a flow tongue. And the LORD faid unto him, Who hath made mans mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the feeing, or the blind have not I the LORD? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou Bak fay. 13 And he faid, O my Lord, fend I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt fend. 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Mofes, and he faid, is not Aaon the Levite thy brother? I know that he can (peak well. And alfo behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he feeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. that he may ferve me: and if thou refle to let him go, behold, I will flay thy son, even thy firft-born. 24 And it came to pafs by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and fought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a fharp ftone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and caft it at his fees, and faid,Surely a bloody husband art thou to me. 26 So he let him go: then the faid, A bloody husband then art becaufe of the circumcifion. 27 And the LORD faid to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Mofes. And he went and met him in the mount of God, and kiffed him. 28 And Mofes told Aaron all the words of the LORD,who had fent him,and all the figns which he had commanded him. 29 And Mofes and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Ifrael. 30 And Aaron fpake all the words which the LORD had fpoken unto Mofes, and did the figns in the fight of the people. 31nd the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had vifited the children of Ifrael, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped. CHAP. V. 15 And thou shalt fpeak unto him, and Put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and in, and told Pharaoh, Thus faith Nd afterward Mofes and Aaron went will teach you what ye shall do. 16 And he fhall be thy fpokefman unto the LORD God of Ifrael, Let my people the people: and he fhall be, even he shall go, that they may hold a feaft unto me in be to thee inftead of a mouth, and thou the wilderness. that be to him inftead of God. 2 And Pharaoh faid, Who is the LORD 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine that I fhould obey his voice to let Irel hand, wherewith thou shalt do figns. go I know not the LORD, neither will I 18 And Mofes went and returned to let Ifrael go. And Jethro defert, and facrifice unto the LORD our faid to Mofes, Go in peace. God, left he fall upon us with peftilence or with the fword. 19 And the LORD faid unto Mofes in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which fought thy life. 20 And Mofes took his wife, and his returned to the land of Egypt. And Mofe, and fet them upon an afs, and he es took the rod of God in his hand. And the LORD faid unto Mofes, When thou goeft to return into Egypt, fe that thou do all thofe wonders before Pharaoh which I have put in thine hand I will harden his heart, that he fhall t let the people go. And thou fhalt fay unto Pharaoh, Tha faith the LORD, Ifrael is my fon, De my fift-born. And I fay unto thee, Let my fon go, 4 And the king of Egypt faid unto them, Wherefore do ye, Mofes and Aaron, lec the people from their works? get you unto your burdens. 5 And Pharaoh faid, Behold, the peo ple of the land now are many, and you make them reft from their burdens. 6 And Pharaoh commanded the fame day the task-mafters of the people, and their officers, faying, 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather ftraw for themselves. 8 And the tale of the bricks which they did make heretofore, you hall lay upon them; you shall not diminish ught ther C & |
