PRAYERS.

For rain.

O GOD! Our heavenly father! who hast promised, by Jesus Christ, to all those who love and obey thee, all things necessary to their bodily sustenance; send us, we beseech thee, in this our necessity, such moderate rain and showers, that we may receive the fruits of the earth for our maintenance and comfort; and grant, that we may shew our thankfulness to thee by our increased obedience to thy holy laws, which thou hast given us in the gospel of Jesus Christ our lord. Amen.

For fair weather.

O ALMIGHTY and most merciful GOD! although we, for our iniquities, deserve thy chastisement; yet, we trust, that upon our repentance, thou wilt send us such weather, that we may receive the fruits of the earth in their due season; and learn, from all thy dispensations, to amend our lives; and, for thy clemency, to give thee praise and thanks, now and for ever. Amen.

In the time of dearth and famine.

O GOD! heavenly father! whose gift it is that the rain doth fall, and the earth is fruitful; that the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fishes of the sca increase and multiply; behold, we beseech thec, the afflictions of thy people; and grant, that the scarcity and dearth which we now suffer, may, through thy goodness, be mercifully turned into plenty, that we may be preserved to praise and thank thee for this, and for all thy mercies to us, ac-. cording to the gospel of Jesus Christ our lord. Amen.

In the time of war and tumults.

O ALMIGHTY GOD! king of kings, and governor of all things! whose power no creature is able to resist; to whom it justly belongeth to punish sinners, and to be merciful to those, who truly repent; save and deliver us, we humbly beseech thee, from the hands of our enemies; suffer them not to be thy scourge unto us, but scatter them by thy almighty power, and defeat all their attempts against us; that we, being assisted with thy defence, may be preserved from all perils, to praise and thank thee, who art the only giver of all victory. Amen.

In the time of the plague, or other common

sickness.

O ALMIGHTY GOD! have compassion upon us, thine offending creatures, who are now visited with great sickness and mortality. Be pleased, O JEHOVAH! upon our penitent and humble supplication, to withdraw from us this grievous sickness; and, from the abundance of thy mercy, to bless us with returning health, and joy, and thankfulness, Amen.

THANKSGIVINGS.

¶ For rain.

O GOD! Our heavenly father! who, by thy gracious providence, dost cause the rain to descend upon the earth, that it may bring forth fruit for the use of man; we give thee humble thanks, that it hath pleased thee, in our great necessity, to send us a joyful rain, and to refresh and fertilize the earth; to the great comfort of us thy servants, who desire to praise and thank thee for thy seasonable and great kindness. Amen.

For fair weather.

O GOD! who hast mercifully relieved and comforted us by a seasonable and happy change of weather; we praise and thank thee for this thy mercy; and will declare thy loving kindness from generation to generation. Amen.
