cry unto thee in the day, and I complain before thee in the night;

2 Let my prayer come into thy presence; incline thine ear to my cry:

3 For my soul is full of trouble, and my life advanceth near to the grave.

4 I am accounted as one of those who are gone down to the pit; I am become like a man that hath no strength:

5 Like the dead I am esteemed, like the slain that lie in the sepulchre; whom thou rememberest no more, and who are cut off from thy care.

6 Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in the place of darkness, and in the shadow of death.

7 Thine indignation presseth upon me; and thou sinkest me; with all thy

waves.

8 Thou hast removed mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them.

9 They confine me, that I cannot come forth mine eye-sight faileth through affliction.

:

10 Every day I call upon thee, O JEHOVAH! I stretch out mine hands unto thee: 11" Wilt

II" Wilt thou perform wonders," say I, "for the dead? Shall the deceased arise, and praise thee?

12 "Shall thy mercy be recounted in the grave; or thy truth in the midst of destruction?

13" Shall thy wonderful works be acknowledged in the region of darkness, and thy justice in the land where all things are forgotten?"

14 When I cry unto thee, O JEHŐ-VAH! and early in the morning my prayer cometh unto thee;

15. Wherefore, O JEHOVAH! dost thou reject me, and hide thy countenance from me?

16 I have been afflicted and tormented from my youth; I have borne thy terrors, until I am exceedingly disturbed in mind. 17 Thy wrath hath passed over mê; thy terrors have destroyed me:

18 They have surrounded me like water every day; they have entirely encompassed

me.

19 My lovers and friends thou hast removed far from me; mine acquaintance thou keepest from my sight.

PSALM LXXXIX.

O JEHOVAH! I will sing of thy mercies for ever; with my mouth I will celebrate thy truth, from generation to generation.

2 Thy mercy was ordained for ever; thou didst fix the token of thy truth in the heavens for thou, O JEHOVAH! didst declare:

3

"I have made a covenant with my chosen; I have sworn unto David my ser

vant :

4 Saying, "I will confirm thy posterity for ever, while I establish thy throne from generation to generation.”

5 The heavens praise thy wonderful works, O JEHOVAH! yea, thy faithfulness in the assembly of thy servants.

6 For who in heaven can be compared unto JEHOVAH? Who among the gods is like unto JEHOVAH !

7 A GOD, feared in the assembly of the holy ones; great and to be revered above all those who are around him?

8 O JEHOVAH! GOD of hosts! who is endued with power as thou art? and thy faithfulness surroundeth thee.

9 Thou rulest the swelling of the sea; thou stillest the waves thereof, when they

arise.

10 Like a mighty warrior, thou hast subdued Egypt; thou hast dispersed thine enemies with thy powerful arm.

II The heavens are thine, and the earth is thine; thou laidest the foundation of the world, and all that it contains.

12 Thou didst create the north and the south; Tabor and Herman rejoice in thy

name.

13 Thou hast a mighty arm; strong is thine hand, and exalted is thy righthand.

14 Justice and judgment are the basis of thy throne; mercy and truth go before thy face.

15 Happy are the people who know thee, O JEHOVAH! they walk in the light of thy countenance :

16 Through thy name they rejoice all the day, and through thy justice they

exalt themselves.

17 For thou art the glory of their strength; and thou exaltest their horn with thy favour.

18 When

18 When our defence was from JEHOVAH; and our dominion from the holy one of Israel :

19 Then thou didst speak in a vision, to thy servants, and didst declare,-"I have given help unto a man, I have exalted a youth from among the people:

20 "I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him;

21" Whom mine hand shall establish; yea, mine arm shall strengthen him;

22 "The enemy shall not oppress him; neither shall the son of wickedness afflict him.

23 "But I will destroy his enemies before his face, and I will smite those who hate him:

24" And my truth and my mercy shall be with him, and through my name his horn shall be exalted:

25 "I have appointed his hand to rule over the sea, and his right-hand over the rivers.

26 "He shall call upon me, saying; "Thou art my father, my GOD, and the rock of my salvation."
