WHY do nations tumultuously conspire together? and the peoples forın vain designs? 2 Why do kings of the earth and rulers combine against JEHOVAH, and against his anointed? 3 Let us break," say they, " their bonds asunder, and cast away their yoke from us." 4 He who dwelleth in the heavens will laugh; JEHOVAH will hold them in derision. 5 Then will he speak unto them in his wrath, and confound them in his great displeasure. 6 For, I am his appointed king over Zion, his holy mountain : 42 7 I will 7 I will declare the decree of JEHOVAH. He said unto me: "Thou art my son; this day have I adopted thee : 8 "Ask of me; and I will give thee nations for thine inheritance, and the most distant parts of the land for thy possession. 9 "Thou shalt rule them with a sceptre of iron; thou shalt dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel." 10 Therefore now, ye kings! be wise; be instructed, ye judges of the land! II Serve JEHOVAH with fear; and worship him with trembling. 12 Adore sincerely, lest he be angry, and ye perish in your perverse way: for, soon as his wrath shall be kindled, happy are all those who place their trust in him. PSALM III. O JEHOVAH! how are mine enemies increased! bow numerous are those who rise up against me ! 2 How numerous are those, who say of me;-" 1 here is no safety for him from his GOD!" 3 But thou, o JEHOVAH! art to me a shield; thou art my glory, and the raiser up of mine head. 4 I call upon JEHOVAH with my voice; and he heareth me from his holy mountain. 5 I lie down, I sleep, I awake again; for JEHOVAH sustaineth me. 6 I am not afraid of the myriads of people who set themselves against me on all sides. 7 Arise, O JEHOVAH! save me, my GOD! for thou canst smite the jaws of all mine enemies; thou canst break the teeth of the wicked. 8 Deliverance cometh from JEHOVAH: may thy blessing, O JEHOVAH! be upon thy people! PSALM IV. HEAR me, when I invoke thee, O JEHOVAH! the protector of mine innocence ! thou art wont to relieve me when I have been in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. 2 Ye sons of men! how long will ye asperse my reputation ? how long will ye love L3 love delusion, and seek after disappoint ment ? 3 Know that JEHOVAH distinguisheth the righteous man : when I call upon JEHOVAH, he heareth me. 4 Stand in awe, and commit not the sin that is in your hearts; consider this upon your beds, and be quiet. 5 Offer the sacrifice of righteousness; and place your trust in JEHOVAH. 6 But many of you say: "Who will show us plenty ?" 7 O JEHOVAH! the light of thy countenance hath greatly shone upon us. 8 Thou makest mine heart more glad than theirs is, even when their corn, and wine, and oil are increased. 9 I will lie down to rest, and sleep in peace; for thou alone, O JEHOVAH! canst make me to repose in safety.
