SONGS of immortal praise belong
To thee, almighty GOD!

To thee are due our heart, our tongue,
To spread thy name abroad.

II

How great the works which thou hast wrought!

How glorious in our sight!
And men, in ev'ry age, have sought
Thy wonders with delight.

How most correct is nature's frame!
How wise th' eternal mind!
Thy counsels never change the scheme
That thy first thoughts design'd.

IV

Nature and time, and earth and skies
Thy heav'nly skill proclaim:
What shall we do to make us wise,
But learn to know thy name?

V

To fear thy pow'r, to trust thy grace,

Is our divinest skill;

And he's the wisest of our race

That best obeys thy will.

25*

THE SAME.

I

GREAT GOD! the heav'ns' well order'd frame Declares the glories of thy name;

There thy rich works of wonder shine: A thousand starry beauties there, A thousand radiant marks appear, Of boundless pow'r and skill divine.

II

From night to day, from day to night,
The dawning and the dying light,
Lectures of heav'nly wisdom read:
With silent eloquence they raise
Our thoughts to the creator's praise,
And neither sound nor language need.

III

Where'er the sun beams forth abroad,
He smiles and speaks his maker, GOD;
All nature joins to show thy praise.
Thy glories through creation shine :
LORD! we confess the work divine,
And songs of cheerful homage raise.

THE LOVE OF GOD.

I

GREAT GOD! how wondrous are thy ways! How firm thy truth! how large thy love! Thou takest mercy for thy throne,

And thence dost make thy kindness known.

II

Not half so high GOD's pow'r hath spread
The starry heav'ns above our head,
As his great love exceeds our praise,
Exceeds the highest hopes we raise.

III

Not half so far his pow'r hath plac'd
The rising morning from the west,
As his forgiving love removes

The causeless fears of those he loves.

IV

Thou, mighty GOD! the wise, the just! Know'st that our frame is feeble dust; And wilt no heavy load impose Beyond the strength that thou bestow'st.

V

Thy constant love, O GOD! is sure,
To all thy creatures 'twill endure;
From age to age, that love will reign;
Nor children's children hope in vain.

GOD OUR FATHER AND OUR FRIEND.

I

ALMIGHTY GOD! we all depend
On thy paternal care:

Thou wilt our father, and our friend,
In ev'ry scene appear.

II

With open hand, and lib'ral heart,
Thou wilt our wants supply;
Thy heav'nly blessings still impart,
And no good thing deny.

III

Thou knowest what is good and fit,
And wisdom guides thy love;
To thine appointments we submit,
And ev'ry choice approve.

IV

In thy paternal love and care

Our cheerful hearts confide; Thy mercies all our comfort are, Thy wisdom is our guide.

V

Almighty GOD! we all depend
On thy paternal care;

Thou wilt our father, and our friend,
In ev'ry scene appear.

PRAISE TO GOD FOR ALL HIS MERCIES.

I

O PRAISE the LORD, our souls!
Let all within us join,

And aid our tongues, to praise his name,
Whose favours are divine.

II

O praise the LORD, our souls! Nor let his mercies lie Forgotten in unthankfulness, And without praises die.

III

'Tis he forgives our sins: 'Tis he relieves our pain; 'Tis he who heals our sicknesses, And gives us health again.

IV

He fills the poor with good; He gives the suff'rers rest: His justice shall oppressors find, His mercy the opprest.

V

He who preserves from death,
Hath sov'reign pow'r to save:
He crowns our future lives with love,
When raised from the grave.
