A. Yes. John vi. 70, 71. Have not I chofen you twelve, and one of you is a Devil? He fpake of Judas Iscariot, the Son of Simon, for he it was that should betray him.

Q. And what is it to seek to Conjurors, Witches and Wizards, and to make Use of Charms for any Relief or Help? Are not these things, think you, diabolical and wicked Practices?

A. Yes. And they who do fuch things, are an Abomination unto the Lord. Deut. xviii. 12.

Q. What is your fecond Ghoftly Enemy?
A. The World with its Pomps and Va-

nities.

Q. What mean you by the World? Do you not mean thereby,

1. The Men of this World, i. e. Worldly and

wicked Men? A. Yes. 1 John v. 19. The whole World lieth in Wickedness.

The Second thing to be

renounced.

2. The things of this World?

A. Yes. For, all that is in the World, is the Luft of the Flesh, the Luft of the Eye, and the Pride of Life. 1 John ii.16. And these specious but empty Objects are its Pomps and Vanities.

Q. Now that thefe Worldly things must be all renounced by us, it is neceffarily fuppofed that they are some way evil. Are they fo in their

own Nature?

A. No. For God faw every thing that he had made, and behold it was very good. Gen. i. 31.

Q. Is there then a lawful Ufe of all these Worldly things?

A. Yes. 1 Cor. vii. 31. We must use the World, as not abusing it.

Q. But more particularly, is there a lawful and honest Use,

1. Of Worldly Riches?

A. Yes. Prov. iii. 9. Honour the Lord with thy Substance.

2. Of Worldly Pleafures?

A. Yes. For to every thing there is a Season, and a Time to every Purpofe under the Sun, A Time to weep, and a Time to laugh; a Time to mourn, and a Time to dance. Eccl. iii. 3, 4.

3. Of Worldly Honours?

A. Yes. Pharaoh took off his Ring from his Hand, and put it upon Jofeph's

Hand,

Hand, and arrayed him in Vestures
of fine Linnen, and put a gold Chain
about his Neck. Gen. xli. 42.

Q. It feems then that the Evil of Worldly things, it is not in their Nature, but in the evil Ufe of them; and fo they are our Enemies, not in a proper Senfe, but only paffively and eventually, as being those things wherewith Satan tempts us, and wherein we often fin, and hurt ourselves.

A. Yes. For every Creature of God is good, 1 Tim. iv. 4. And Titus i. 15. Unto the Pure all things are pure, but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure.

Q. What is your third Ghoftly Enemy?
A. The Flesh with its finful Lufts.

Q. What do you mean by thefe Words?
A. I understand,

1. By the Flesh, our corrupted and de-
praved Nature. John iii. 6. That
which is born of the Flefh, is Flesh.
2. By the Lufts thereof, its diforderly
and vile Affections. Gal. v. 24. They
that are Chrift's, have crucified the
Flesh, with its Affections and Lufts.

Q. Thus you fee the Objects or evil things you must renounce; even the Devil, World, and Flesh. Now what is it to renounce them?

A. In general to renounce them all, is to reject them with Abhorrence.

Q. But

The third thing to be Tenounced.

Q. But more particularly,

1. As it refpects the Devil, muft you not so renounce him, as to refift and abhorr his wicked Suggestions and Temptations?

A. Yes. John iv. 7. Refift the Devil, and he will fly from you..

2. As it refpects the World, both the Perfons and Things thereof, Muft you renounce all Worldly Perfons in fuch fort, as wholly to avoid their Company and Conversation upon

Earth?

A. No. For then we muft needs go out of the World. 1 Cor. v. 10.

Q. Or must we only so renounce them, as not to follow their evil ways?

A. Yes. Rom. xii. 2. Be not conformed to this World.

Q. And should we ordinarily avoid their Company?

A. Yes. For, know ye not that a little Leaven leaveneth the whole Lump? I Cor. v. 6.

Q. And as to Worldly things, muft we renounce them in fuch fort as to abandon the Use of them?

A. No. For God hath given us these things for our Ufe and Benefit. Eccl. v. 18. It is good and comely for one to eat and drink, and enjoy the Good of all his Labour, that he taketh under the Sun, all the Days of his Life, wich God giveth him; for it is his Portion. Q. Or are we only to reject them so far as they are evil to us, either in hindering us from our Duty, or in drawing us to any Sin?
