Sida 5 - For no country ever takes notice of the revenue laws of another. " <The objection, that a contract is immoral or illegal as between plaintiff and defendant, sounds at all times very ill in the mouth of the defendant. It is not for his sake, however, that the objection is ever allowed; but it is founded in general principles of policy, which the defendant has the advantage of, contrary to the real justice, as between him and the plaintiff, by accident, if I may so say. The principle of public policy...
Sida 60 - Each individual of the society has a right to be protected by it in the enjoyment of his life, liberty and property, according to standing laws.
Sida 5 - No court will lend its aid to a man who founds his cause of action upon an immoral or an illegal act. If, from the plaintiff's own stating or otherwise, the cause of action appears to arise ex turpi causa, or the transgression of a positive law of this country, there the court says he has no right to be assisted. The manner and extent of regulation rest in the discretion of the governing authority.

Sida 442 - We admit, as all must admit, that the powers of the government are limited, and that its limits are not to be transcended. But we think the sound construction of the constitution must allow to the national legislature that discretion, with respect to the means by which the powers it confers are to be carried into execution, which will enable that body to perform the high duties assigned to it in the manner most beneficial to the people.
Sida 148 - No law shall be revived, amended, or the provisions thereof extended, or conferred by reference to its title only, but so much thereof as is revived, amended, extended, or conferred, shall be reenacted, and published at length.
Sida 393 - The court must, in every stage of an action, disregard any error or defect, in the pleadings or proceedings, which does not affect the substantial rights of the adverse party; and no judgment can be reversed or affected by reason of such error or defect.
Sida 355 - By the rule of construction known as 'ejusdem generis,' where general words follow the enumeration of particular classes of persons or things, the general- words will be construed as applicable only to persons or things of the same general nature or class as those enumerated.
