them. And he fpake this parable unto them, faying, What man of you having an hundred fheep, if he lofe one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is loft, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, faying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my fheep which was loft. I fay unto you, That likewife joy fhall be in heaven over one finner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just perfons which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of filver, if the lofe one piece, doth not light a candle, and fweep the house, and seek diligently till fhe find it? And when the hath found it, fhe calleth her friends and her neighbours together, faying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I had loft. Likewife, I fay unto you, There is joy in the prefence of the angels of God over one finner that repenteth.

For the earnest expectation, &c.] For the anxious expectation of the whole world intently looks after fuch a manifeftation of a future ftate of glory, as is worthy of the fons of God. The world, I fay, looks for happinefs; or mankind was involuntarily fubjected to evil, and the wifer part of them are fenfible of their present imperfect ftate. But this was the juft will of God, on account of man's firft tranfgreffion.

ture waiteth for the manifeftation of the fons of God. For the creature was made fubject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath fubjected the fame in hope: because the creature itself alfo fhall be delivered from the bondage of corruption, into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves alfo, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourfelves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

The Gofpel. St. Luke vi. 36.

E ye therefore merciful, as your Father alfo is merciful. Judge not, and ye fhall not be judged: condemn not, and ye fhall not be condemned: forgive, and ye fhall be forgiven: give, and it shall be given unto you'; good measure, preffed down, and fhaken together, and running over, fhall men give into your bofom. For with the fame measure that ye mete withal, it shall be measured to you again. And he fpake a parable unto them; Can the blind lead the blind? fhall they not both fall into the ditch? The difciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceiveft not the beam that is in thine own eye? Either how canft thou fay to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyfelf be-, holdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, caft out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then fhalt thou fee clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

Bondage of corruption] Death, or corruption in the grave; to which the redemption of the body is oppofed, verfe 23. This expectation of the world is a manifeft truth, for we know &c. The words in Pfalm lxxxix. 47, 48, exprefs the general complaint of mankind in all ages.

Not only they] And not only the heathen world, but thofe amongst the Jews who were the earliest and most diftinguished converts to Christianity.: The redemption of our body] From the grave, to life and happiness.

BE ye all of one mind, having compaffion one of ano

another: love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwife bleffing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a bleffing. For he that will love life, and fee good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they fpeak no guile, Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him feek peace, and enfue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers; but the face of the Lord is. against them that do evil, And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and: if ye fuffer for righteoufnefs fake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; but fanctify the Lord God in your hearts.

And they beckoned unto their partners which were in the other hip, that they fhould come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, fo that they began to fink. When Simon Peter faw it, he fell down at Jefus knees, faying, Depart from me; for I am a finful man, O Lord. For he was aftonifhed, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: and fo was alfo James, and John, the fons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. The Epistle. Rom. vi. 3.

KNOW ye not, that fo many of us as were baptized into Jefus Chrift were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptifm into death: that like as Chrift was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we fhall be alfo in the likeness of his refurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of fin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not ferve fin. For he that is dead, is freed from fin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall alfo live with him; knowing that Chrift being raifed from the dead, dieth no more; death

nefs fhall exceed the righteousness of the fcribes and Pharifees, ye fhall in no cafe enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was faid by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whofoever shall kill fhall be in danger of the judgment. But I fay unto you, that whofoever is angry with his brother without a caufe fhall be in danger of the judgment: and whofoever fhall fay to his brother, Raca, fhall be in danger of the council: but whofoever fhall fay, Thou fool, fhall be in danger of hell-fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembereft that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; left at any time the adverfary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be caft into prifon. Verily I fay unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou haft paid the uttermoft farthing.

and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts

Raca] Thou vile man. The original word implies a charge of empti nefs, meannefs, and despicableness.

Thou fool] A charge of extreme infatuation and wickednefs.

Hell-fire] Is a punishment correfponding to a death by fire in the valley of Hinnom. Jerem. vii. 31. It is here afferted that anger, reproach, and reviling, will be punished in proportion to their guilt.
