Senator Laken an introduced Senate bill No. 170, entitled An act to declare the judge of the 16th judicial circuit ex officio judge of the Hannibal court of common pleas, to allow him a compensation for services in holding said court of common pleas, and to repeal the act approved March 17, 1871, by which the compensation for holding said common pleas court was ordered to be paid out of the county treasury; read the first time.

Senator Terry introduced Senate bill No. 171, entitled An act for the collection of special tax-bills; read the first time.

Senator Burkeholder introduced Senate bill No. 172, entitled An act to secure to children over six and fourteen years of age, the benefit of a common school education; read the first time.

Senator Phelan introduced Senate bill No. 173, entitled An act to repeal section 5 of chapter 222 of the General Statutes, entitled "Of the treatment and conduct of convicts," and other matters, and to substitute in lieu thereof a new section; read the first time.

Senator Thompson introduced Senate bill No. 174, entitled An act in relation to dispositions in actions of quo warranto, etc.; read the first time.

Senator Mosby offered the following resolution:

Resolved, That all committees of the Senate appointed to examine the Institutions of the State, under the Constitution, be allowed their actual expenses necessarily incurred while in the performance of such duty; which was adopted.

Senator Thompson introduced Senate bill No. 175, entitled An act to increase the number of judges of the circuit court of St. Louis county, to change its name, and to provide for a special term to be held in the county of St. Louis, etc.; read the first time.

Senator Phelan introduced Senate bill No. 176, entitled An act to regulate the deposit of the funds of the State; read the first time. On motion of Senator Terry, the Senate adjourned.
