God without a fear, Pa-tient-ly be - liev - ing He will make all clear. A-men.

2 Calmer yet and calmer, In the hour of pain,

Surer yet and surer

Peace at last to gain;
Suffering still and doing,
To His will resigned,
And to God subduing

Heart and will and mind.

3 Higher yet and higher
Out of clouds and night,
Nearer yet and nearer

Rising to the light;
Light serene and holy,

Where my soul may rest,
Purified and lowly,
Sanctified and blest;

4 Swifter yet and swifter
Ever onward run,
Firmer yet and firmer
Step as I go on:
Oft these earnest longings
Swell within my breast,
Yet their inner meaning

Ne'er can be expressed.

JOHANN WOLFGANG VON Gorthe

Love divine, all love ex - cell - ing, Joy of heav'n,to earth come down;

Fix in us Thy hum- ble dwell-ing, All Thy faith-ful mer - cies crown:

Jesus, Thou art all com-pas- sion, Pure,un-bound-ed love Thou

art:

Vis - it us with Thy sal va- tion, En-ter ev'ry trembling heart. A-men.

2 Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit Into every troubled breast:

Let us all in Thee inherit,

Let us find Thy promised rest:

Come, Almighty to deliver,

Let us all Thy life receive;
Suddenly return, and never,
Never more Thy temples leave.

3 Finish then Thy new creation, Pure and spotless let us be; Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee: Changed from glory into glory,

Till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise. CHARLES WESLEY, 1747.

2 Forward, when in childhood
Wakes the growing mind;
All through youth and manhood,
Not a thought behind:
Speed through realms of nature,

Climb the steps of grace;
Faint not, till in glory

Gleams our Father's face.
Forward, all the life-time,

Climb from height to height,
Till the head be hoary,
Till the eve be light.
3 Forward, flock of Jesus,
Salt of all the earth,
Till each Christlike purpose
Spring to glorious birth.
Sick, they ask for healing,

Blind, they grope for day;

Pour upon the nations

Wisdom's loving ray.

Forward, out of error,

Leave behind the night; Forward, through the darkness Forward, into light!

4 Glories upon glories

Hath our God prepared,
By the souls that love Him
One day to be shared:
Eye hath not beheld them,

Ear hath never heard;
Nor of these have uttered
Thought or speech a word.
Forward, marching eastward
Where the heaven is bright,
Till the veil be lifted,

Till our faith be sight.

HENRY ALFORD, 1871

5 Grant us Thy help till foes are backward driven,
Grant them Thy truth, that they may be forgiven,
Grant peace on earth, and, after we have striven,
Peace in Thy Heaven.

M. A. VON LÖWENSTERN, 1644. Tr. PHILIP Pusey, 1857
