THE Proprietors of the Athenæum find it expedient in this

Number to announce the discontinuance of that publication.

Whilst they have had the satisfaction of seeing it approved by a respectable number of readers, and enriched by communications from learned and ingenious correspondents which, they trust, will confer a permanent value on its volumes, they have been rendered sensible that the attempt to unite with the common matter of a Magazine the products of superior literature, has failed to obtain that degree of popularity which, at this period of extraordinary expense attached to publication, is necessary to prevent loss. It is with considerable regret that they renounce the further trial of a plan which seemed to them well calculated to combine entertainment with instruction, and which, they flatter themselves, has not been void of temporary utility. If at any future more auspicious period they shall be able to afford a suitable vehicle for the occasional exertions of such writers as have adorned the pages of the Athenæum, it will afford them much satisfaction; in the mean time they take their leave of the Public, with a grateful sense of all the favours they have received.

June 1, 1809.

All the contributions for the Athenæum which have not been used are left for return upon application, at Messrs. Longman's and Co. Paternoster Row.
