48. The parable of the fig tree.

THERE were present at that season some that A. D. 31. told him of the Galilæans, whose blood Pilate 2 had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto them, "Suppose ye that "these Galilæans were sinners above all the "Galilæans, because they suffered such things? 3" I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye 4" shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and "slew them, think ye that they were sinners 5 "above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I "tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall 6" all likewise perish." He spake also this pa"rable; "A certain man had a fig tree planted* Is. 5. 2. "in his vineyard; and he came and sought 7" fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he "unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these "three years I come seeking fruit on this fig “tree, and find none: cut it down; why cum8 "bereth it the ground? And he answering said "unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, 9" till I shall dig about it, and dung it: and if "it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that "thou shalt cut it down."

49. The parable of the sower, and other parables. M. 13.

THE same day went Jesus out of the house, 1 and sat by the sea side. And he began again M*. 4. to teach by the sea side: and there was ga- 1 thered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into a ship, and sat in the sea; and the whole multitude was by the sea on the land. And he taught them many things by parables, 2 and said unto them in his doctrine, "Hearken; 3 Behold, there went out a sower to sow :

up, because it had no depth of earth: but 6 "when the sun was up, it was scorched; and "because it had no root, it withered away. And 7 'some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. Col. 1.6." And other fell on good ground, and did yield 8 "fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought
