Wishing you every manner of happinesss and prosperity in your civil as well as political career, and that your constituents will duly weigh and appreciate your invaluable services, performed during the session now closing, and that all of you shall arrive safely at your respective home :-in fine, that we shall have the mutual pleasure of meeting each other on a future occasion, with these imperfect remarks I conclude.

The President then pronounced the Council to be adjourned until the second Monday in June next.

MONDAY, June 11, 1838.

The roll was called at 11 o'clock, A. M. by the Secretary, when the following members answered to their names, viz:

From the county of

Brown-Alexander J. Irwin, Jno. P. Arndt.

Milwaukee-Gilbert Knapp.

Iowa-Ebenezer Brigham. John B. Terry.

Du Buque-John Foley, Thomas M'Craney.

Des Moines-Arthur B. Inghram.

And a quorum, consisting of a majority of the whole number of the Council, being present,

On motion of Mr. Arndt,

Resolved, that Arthur B. Inghram be, and he is hereby appointed President of this Council.

Mr. Inghram having been conducted to the chair, made his acknowledgments to the House as follows:

Gentlemen of the Council:

It is with the most devout gratitude towards the disposer of all good, who enabled us again to assemble within these walls, that I now cordially congratulate you on your return amongst us. It is not on this occasion my purpose, as I believe it would be out of place if not impolitic, to occupy many minutes of your valuable time with any crude observations of mine. However, I may be permitted to make a remark or two, as some may not feel satisfied with expressions of congratulations answering the object of our assembling together.

It is great cause of gratification to us, as well as our constituents, that in as much as the public prints can be credited, the major part, if not all the acts passed by us at the last session were, or are about being approved by the Executive of our general government-and there is every reason to cherish the hope
