"This useful compilation (the Collectanea) was commenced in 1774. Its original design was to bring into public notice scarce and inedited tracts relating to Ireland. After the publication of a few numbers on this plan, it lay dormant till the year 1781, when it was revived, chiefly at the instigation of the late Rt. Hon. W. Burton Conyngham, who then instituted a Society for the investigation of Irish antiquities.
