If it be possible, as much as lieth in us, let us live peaceably with all men (Rom. xii. 18).

Let us follow after the things that make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another (Rom. xiv. 19).

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Eph. iv. 3).

May the peace of God which passeth all understanding, keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Phil. iv. 7).

OF CHRISTIAN BENEVOLENCE.

As we have opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith (Gal. vi. 10).

May we remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts xx. 35).

May we draw out our soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall our light rise in obscurity, and our darkness be as the noon-day (Isa. lviii. 10).

Let us not be forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have entertained angels un. awares (Heb. xiii. 2).

Let us use hospitality one to another, without grudging (1 Pet. iv. 9).

Let us not be weary in well-doing; knowing that in due season we shall reap, if we faint not (Gal. vi. 9).

OF CHRISTIAN CONTENTMENT.

May we take heed, and beware of covetous

ness; for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth (Luke xii. 15).

Let us take no undue thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things S of itself; sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof (Matt. vi. 34).

Let us be careful for nothing; but in every thing, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let us make our requests known unto God (Phil. iv. 6).

May our conversation be without covetousness; and let us be content with such things as we have (Heb xiii. 5).

Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out: and having food and raiment, let us therewith be content (1 Tim. vi. 6).

OF GIVING THANKS FOR FOOD.

O Lord, thou art good unto all; and thy tender mercies are over all thy works (Ps. cxlv. 9). The eyes of all things wait upon thee, that thou mayest give them their meat in due season. That thou givest they gather; thou openest thy hand, and they are filled with good (Ps. civ.27). Thou givest to the beast his food, and to the young ravens when they cry (Ps. cxlvii. 9).

Thou givest meat to them that fear thee: thou wilt ever be mindful of thy covenant (Ps.cxi. 5). O how great is thy goodness, which thou hast

laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men (Ps. xxxi. 19).

Thine eyes, O Lord, are upon them that fear thee; upon them that hope in thy mercy: to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine (Ps. xxxiii. 18).

Let not our table become a snare before us; nor that which is for our welfare become a trap (Ps. lxix. 22).

Lord teach us, That whether we eat, or drink, or whatsoever we do, we may do all to thy glory (1 Cor. x. 31).

OF LOVE TO THE PUBLIC ORDINANCES.

Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts; we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple (Ps. lxv. 4).

May each of us be enabled to say with David,

-One thing have I desired of the Lord, and that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple (Ps. xxvii. 4).

How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Lord of hosts! My soul longeth, yea even fainteth for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God (Ps. lxxxiv. 1).

-O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee; my soul thirsteth for thee; my flesh longeth

[ocr errors]

for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is to see thy power and thy glory, so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary (Ps. lxiii. 1).

-Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth (Ps. xxvi. 8).

-We will go into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy; and in thy fear will we worship toward thy holy temple (Ps. v. 7).

FOR A BLESSING UPON THE ORDINANCES.

Do thou bring us unto thy holy mountain, and make us joyful in thy house of prayer (Isa. Ivi. 7).

Lord, save thy people, and bless thine inheritance; feed them also, and lift them up for ever (Ps. xxviii. 9).

May Christ crucified be unto us the wisdom of God, and the power of God, to our salvation. (1 Cor. i. 24).

May the gospel be preached with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven, and may the word of the Lord have free course and be glorified (2 Thess. iii. 1).

May thy word be quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow; and may it be a discerner of the thoughts and intents of our heart (Heb. iv. 12).

As the rain cometh down, and the snow from

heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater; so may thy word be that goeth forth out of thy mouth: let it not return unto thee void; but may it accomplish that which thou pleasest, and prosper in the thing whereto thou hast sent it (Isa. Iv. 10).

Do thou open the windows of heaven, and pour out a blessing, till there be not room enough to receive it (Mal. iii. 10).

OF LIBERALITY IN SPREADING THE GOSPEL.

We know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor, that we through his poverty might be rich (2 Cor. viii. 9).

May we honour the Lord with our substance, and with the first fruits of all our increase: so shall our barns be filled with plenty, and our presses shall burst out with new wine (Prov. iii. 9).

There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty. The liberal soul shall be made fat; and he that watereth shall be watered also himself (Prov. xi. 24).

He that soweth sparingly, shall reap also sparingly; and he that soweth bountifully, shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give: not grudgingly, or of necessity; for the Lord loveth a cheerful giver (2 Cor. ix. 6).
