God helps the man that helps himself. God tempers the wind to the shorn lamb. God's providence is the best inheritance. Goodness always enriches the possessor. Goodness alone hath majesty in death. Good wine makes a bad head and a long story.

Good offices are the cement of society.

Gratitude preserves old friendships, and pro

cures new ones.

Greatness and goodness are hard to be overthrown.

Guilt alone maketh annihilation gain.

Have always a regard to thy good name, for that will continue when thy treasures are gone. He dies like a beast who has done no good in his life.

He doubles his gift who gives in time. He loses nothing who keeps God for his friend.

He only is well kept whom God keeps. He that despises small things shall fall by little and little.

He that fears not the future may enjoy the present.

He that is little in his own eyes will not be thought so in the eyes of others.

He that scoffs at the crooked had need to go straight himself.

He that shoots an arrow in jest may kill a man in earnest.

He that would be happy himself must try and make others happy.

He that speaks what he should not may hear what he would not.

He that preaches up war is the devil's chaplain.

He who backs his assertion with an oath just tells us that his bare word is not to be credited.

He that cannot hold his tongue is unworthy of having one.

He that carries his evil passions to the bed with him will find the devil creeping down between the sheets.

He that has no silver in his purse should have silver on his tongue.

He who makes an idol of his interest makes a martyr of his integrity.

He who resolves to amend hath God on his side.

He who swims in sin must sink in sorrow. Heaven's favours here are trials, not rewards.

Help thy father in his old age, and grieve him not on his way to the grave.

Home is home be it never so homely.

Hope the best, but prepare for the worst.
Hopes and fears, griefs and cares, divide life.
Humility is the foundation of virtue.
Hypocritical piety is double iniquity.
Idleness is the parent of want and shame.
Idleness is the sepulchre of a living man.

If thou find out a wise man, make him thy friend, and let thy feet wear the steps of his door.

If thou accompany sin one mile, it will compel thee to go with it twain.

If you hold out a stirrup to the devil, you need not wonder though he should leap into the saddle.

If you trust before you try, you may repent before you die.

In the current of life, beware of the gulf of intemperance.

In youth be temperate, in manhood just, and in old age prudent.

In youth and strength, prepare for age and weakness.

In your intercourse with the world, a spoonful of oil will go farther than a quart of vinegar. Industry is fortune's right hand, and frugality her left.

It is always term time in the court of conscience.

It is better to do well than say well.

It is better to wear out than rust out. It is better to feed nine wasps than starve one bee.

It is better to live in hope than die in despair.

It is enjoyment, and not possession, that renders a man happy.

Jests, like sweetmeats, have often a sour

sauce.

Judge not of men or things at first sight. Keep good men's company, and make yourself one of their number.

Keep thy shop, and thy shop will keep thee.

Kindness is lost upon an ungrateful man. Knowledge of God and ourselves is the perfection of wisdom.

Knowledge is the treasure, but judgment the treasurer of the soul.

Learning is a fortune to the poor, and an ornament to the rich.

Let not thy recreation be expensive, lest the pain of purchasing them exceed the pleasure of their enjoyment.

Let us not fall out, lest we give the devil a feast.

Liberality and thankfulness are the bonds of concord.

Licentiousness in opinion leads to licentiousness in practice.

Little minds, like weak liquors, are soon soured.

Live and let live is sound morality.

Love and friendship make all conditions equal.

Love, pride, and punch stock bedlam.

Malice drinks in the half of its own poison.
Man does what he can, but God what he will.
Man's extremity is God's opportunity.
Man's last domain is but a turf or stone.
Man is immortal till his day come.
Man is to man the surest, sorest ill.
Man proposes, but God disposes.

Man scarce believes he's older for his years. Man wants but little, nor that little long. Men, like watches, should be valued by their going.

Men may live fools, but fools they cannot die. Many live by forms, but there is no dying by forms.

Many may credit you, but wisdom must

crown you.

Meat feeds, cloth cleads, but manners make the man.

Modesty is the presage of rising merit.

Never add trouble to the grief-worn heart. Never do that by proxy which you can do yourself.

Never seek a friend in a palace, nor try him at a feast.

Never sound the trumpet of your own praise. Never trust a new friend, nor an old enemy. None are so often in the wrong as those who pretend to be always in the right.

None draw upon the bank of nature without having to pay back both stock and interest. Not to intend what thou speakest is to give thine heart the lie with thy tongue.

Of all flatterers self-love is the greatest.
Of all poverty wishing is the worst.

Of all the parts of wisdom practice is the best. Of all the virtues gratitude has the shortest memory.

Omission of good is a commission of evil. One bad example destroys many good precepts.

One to-day is worth two to-morrows.
Our birth is nothing but our death begun.
Our peace begins where our ambition ends.
Our truest wisdom wafts us to the skies.
