PART FOURTH.

SCRIPTURE MATERIALS FOR PRAYER IN A SYSTEMATIC FORM.

MISCELLANEOUS DIRECTIONS FOR PRAYER.

When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking (Matt. vi. 7).

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth; therefore, let thy words be few (Eccles. v. 2).

The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord (Prov. xvi. 1).

If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me. For God heareth not sinners; but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth (Ps. lxvi. 18).

If thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to

thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift (Matt. v. 23).

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise (Ps. li. 17).

The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit (Ps. xxxiv. 18).

God is a Spirit; and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John iv. 24).

There is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim. ii. 5).

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you (Matt. vii. 7).

Ask in faith, nothing wavering: for he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed; let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord (James i. 6).

Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son (John xiv. 13).

ADORATION.

THERE IS BUT ONE GOD.

I am the first, and I am the last: and besides me there is no God (Isa. xliv. 6).

There is no God else besides me: a just God and a Saviour (Isa. xlv. 21).

O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest be

tween the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth (2 Kings xix. 15).

Thou art the true God, thou art the living God, and an everlasting King (Jer. x. 10).

There is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him (1 Cor. viii. 6).

There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism : one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all (Eph. iv. 5).

GOD IS ETERNAL.

O Lord, we adore thee as the eternal Jehovah, whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting (Micah v. 2).

Thy name, O Lord, endureth for ever; and thy memorial, O Lord, throughout all genera. tions (Ps. cxxxv. 13).

Thou art the first and the last, and the living one: the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, which is, and which was, and which is to come (Rev. i. 8).

Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure; yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; and as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end (Ps. cii. 25).

Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God (Ps. xc. 1, 2).

GOD IS HOLY.

Thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel (Ps. xxii. 3).

O Lord, who is a God like unto thee,-glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? (Exod. xv. 11).

Thou art righteous in all thy ways, and holy in all thy works (Ps. cxlv. 17).

Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy (Rev. xv. 3).

Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity (Hab. i. 13).

GOD IS OMNISCIENT.

O Lord, thou art light, and in thee there is no darkness at all (1 John i. 5).

Thou art the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning (James i. 17).

O Lord, thou art God, and there is none else; thou art God, and there is none like thee; declaring the end from the beginning, and from

ancient times the things that are not yet done (Isa. xlvi. 9).

Known unto thee, O God, are all thy works, from the beginning of the world, and no thought can be withholden from thee (Acts xv. 18).

Lord, thou art a God of knowledge, and by thee actions are weighed (1 Sam. ii. 3).

Thou seest not as man seest; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but thou lookest on the heart (1 Sam. xvi. 7).

If our heart condemn us, thou art greater than our heart, and knowest all things (1 John iii. 20).

Thou needest not that any should testify of man: for thou knowest what is in man (John ii. 25).

O Lord, thou hast searched us, and known us: thou knowest our down-sitting and our uprising; thou understandest our thoughts afar off. Thou compassest our path, and our lying down, and art acquainted with all our ways; for there is not a word in our tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether (Ps. cxxxix. 1).

GOD IS OMNIPRESENT.

Thou, Lord, lookest from heaven; thou beholdest all the sons of men: from the place of thy habitation thou lookest upon all the inhabitants of the earth, and considerest all their works (Ps. xxxiii. 13).

Thine eyes are in every place, beholding the
