RECOMMENDATORY NOTICE.

THIS little book has a very appropriate title"The Christian's Pocket Companion." It is fitted to be a safe, instructive, entertaining companion to any one, but it is so thoroughly Christian in the sentiments it inculcates, and the feelings it breathes, that none but a Christian will be disposed to take it for a companion. The Christian who does so, will find in it much to guide, to guard, to stimulate, and to comfort him-teachhim to live and how to die.

Its neat form peculiarly fits it for being a Pocket Companion. It requires little room for its accommodation, and will be found a "helpmeet" for those who wish to think on "the things that are true, and honest, and just, and pure, and lovely, and of good report," while they "sit in the house or walk by the way."

It was not got up for the market. The Compiler put the materials together for his own per

sonal improvement, and finding, as he thought, advantage from them, felt disposed to give others an opportunity of sharing that advantage with him.

The book may safely be left to stand on its own merits. The materials are first-rate, and the arrangement is judicious. But to those who have perused" The Memoirs of Serjeant B—," and "The Bible Prayer Book," it will have an additional recommendation of no common force.

It affords me great satisfaction to express once more my cordial esteem for the worthy Serjeant; and my sincere prayer that this collection of some of the best thoughts of the best men, like his former attempts to do good, may have success beyond his expectations, and equal to his wishes.

THE COMPILER'S PREFACE.

"THE Proverbs of Solomon," says Matthew Henry, "are like a box of gold rings, but they are not a gold chain." I have here, however, so linked them together as to form a chain, that union may be strength.

The Best Proverbs of all Nations will be found a safe and pleasing directory, as they have been examined very carefully, both in reference to sound and sense, to principle and practical ten, dency.

As for the Choice Sayings of the Wise and Good, I have " searched for them as for hid treasures;" having digged into more than fifty volumes, magazines, and papers of every descrip. tion where I could find them, either mixed up in the body of a work, or standing by themselves, like soldiers at their post. But 1 was careful, while making selections, to reject all those which could not bear the test of the Christian's Standard Book,-did not contain much meaning in a few
