The Advantage we have by the Dignity of Son. Chip to God, is, that thereby we have a Right to all the Privilèges of the Sons of God: Rom. vili. 17. And if children, then heirs ; heirs of

God, and joint heirs with Christ. The Privi.' leges of the Sons of God are, Access to him as a Father, his fatherly Pity, Protection, Provision, and Correction, and the eternal Inberitance : Eph. iii. 12. Quest. 35. What is Sanctification?

Ans. Sanctification is the work of God's free Grace, whereby we are renewed in the whole Man, after the Image of God, and are enabled more and more to die unto Sin, and live unto Righteousness.

EXPLICATION. All who are effectnally called, are fanctified: And the Effect of their Sanctification on them is,: real Holiness in their own Persons : 1 Thell. v. 23. 24. ' And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly : and I pray God your whole fpirit, and L 21

that calleth you, who also will do it.' Sanctifi. cation then is not a mere Change of our State, but a Change of our Nature : 2 Cor. iii. 18. But .. we all, with open face, beholding as in a glass the ' glory of the Lord, are changed into the fame i. 'mage, from glory to glory, even as by the Spi

rit of the Lord. Chap. v. 17. 'If any man be in • Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed • away, behold, all things are become new.'

It is not an Act done in an Instant, but a Work carried on by Degrees : 2 Cor. iv. 16. 'Though our • Soutward man perish, yet the inward man is re.

(newed day by day. And it is never perfected in this Life: 1 John i. 1o. ' If we say that we have • not sinned, we make him a lyar, and his word is • not in us.' Phil. iii. 12. 'Not as though I had « already attained, either were already perfect: « but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that « for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.' Sanctification then doth differ from Regeneration taken strictly for the Beginning of the new Crea. ture: For Regeneration so taken, being the quickening of the dead Soul, is done in an Instant : Eph. ii. 5. 'God, even when we were dead in fins, " hath quickened us together with Christ.' Com. pared with John v. 25. But Sanctification differ. eth not from, but is the same with Regenera. tion taken largely for the forming and advancing of the new Creature in all its Parts : Tit. ïïi. 5. 6. • Not by works of righteousness, which we have

done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost : which he shed on us abundant
