No Man without real Holiness in his own Perfon, Shall ever fee the Lord, Heb. xii. 14. Howbeit, no unfanctified Person can, by any Endeavours of his, work his own Sanctification, or make himself holy: Jer. xiii. 23. Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye alfo do good, that are accustomed to do evil.' John xv. 5. 6. I am the vine, ye are the branches : 'he that abideth in me, and I in him, the fame 'bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, ' he is caft forth as a branch, and is withered." Tit. i. 15. 16. 'Unto them that are defiled, and unbelieving, is nothing pure; but even their mind ' and confcience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, 'being abominable, and difobedient, and unto every good work reprobate. Our Sanctification then is the Work of God only, I Thess. v. 23. forecited.

It is a Work of God's free Grace: Eph. i. 4. According as he hath chofen us in him, before 'the foundation of the world, that we should be holy, and without blame before him in love.' And it is fuch a Work, in that there is no perfonal Worth in us moving him thereto, Tit. iii. 5. forecited. Wherefore the worst and vileft of Sinners may be fanctified: 1 Cor. vi. 11. They whom the Spirit fanctifies, are Believers united to Chrift, juftified, reconciled, and adopted into the Family of God. Our Sanctification de pends on our Faith, in that it is by Faith, as the inftrumental Caufe, that we are fanctified: Acts xxvi. 18. That they may receive inheritance among them which are fanctified by faith that is in me.' Chap. xv. 9.- Purifying their hearts by faith. Our Sanctification depends on our Union with Chrift, in that it is in Chrift we are fanctified, as Members of his Body: 1 Cor. i. 2.

Our Sanctification depends on our Juftification, in that we are fanctified immediately, through the Efficacy of the Blood of Chrift fprin kled on our Consciences; Heb. ix. 14. How much more fhall the blood of Chrift, who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without spot to God, purge your confcience from dead works ' to ferve the living God?' 1 Pet. i. 2. Our Sanctification depends on our Reconciliation, inasmuch as the fanctifying Virtue of the Blood of Chrift fprings from its atoning Virtue: Heb. ix. 14. forecited. 1 Theff. v. 23. Son; much more being reconciled, we shall be 'faved by his life. And not only fo, but we also joy in God, through our Lord Jefus Chrift, by whom we have now received the atonement. Compared with Matth. i. 21. And she shall bring 'forth a Son, and thou fhalt call his name Jefus ' for he shall save his people from their fins. Our Sanctification depends on our Adoption, in that being adopted into the Family of God, we receive the Spirit of his Son, conforming us to his Image

For whom he did foreknow, he alfo did predeftinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the first-born among many brethren.' Compared with Gal. iv. 6. But we all, with open face, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the fame Image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.'

The Work of Sanctification is twofold; namely, habitual Sanctification, producing in us habitual Holiness; and actual Sanctification, producing in us the Acts and Duties of Holiness.

Habitual Sanctification is the Work of the Spirit, whereby we are renewed in the whole Man af. ter the Image of God. Sanctification is not a bare amending of our Life; but it is also a renewing of our Nature: Eph. iv. 23. 24. And be renewed in the fpirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righte oufnefs and true holiness.' In Sanctification we are renewed in the whole Man; that is to say, in our whole Perfon, Soul and Body: 1 Theff. v.23. And the very God of peace fanctify you wholly: and I pray God your whole fpirit, and foul, and body be preferved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift.' The Soul is renewed, not in refpect of its Subftance, but in respect of its Qualities of the Mind, Will, and Affections, Eph. iv. 23. 24. forecited. The Body is renewed, in Communion with the renewed Soul, whereby its Members become Inftruments of Righteoufnefs: 1 Theff.

Theff. v. 23. forecited. Compared with Rom. vi. 13. Neither yield ye your members as inftru'ments of unrighteoufnefs unto fin: but yield your

felves unto God, as those that are alive from the 'dead; and your members as inftruments of righ⚫teousness unto God.' The Result of that Renewing in the whole Man, is the new Creature, or new Man of Grace on us: 2 Cor. v. 17. 'If any man 'be in Chrift, he is a new creature: old things are 'paffed away, behold, all things are become new.' 'Epb. ii. 10. We are God's workmanship, created in Chrift Jefus unto good works, which God hath 'before ordained that we should walk in them.' Chap. iv. 24. forecited.

The new Creature is formed after the Image of God. And the Image of God reftored in Sanctification, confifts in the new Qualities, of Knowledge in the Mind, Righteousness in the Will, and Holiness in the Affections: Col. iii. 1o. And have " put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge, after the image of him that created him.' Eph. iv. 24. And that ye put on the new man, "which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.' But that reftored Image is expreffed on us immediately, from Jefus Chrift the Second Adam, who is the Image of the invisible God: Gal. iv. 19. My little children, of whom I travail ' in birth again, until Chrift be formed in you.' 1 Cor. xv. 49. As we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
